Deuteronomy

Chapter 24

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

When a man marries a woman, and later she no longer pleases him because he finds something inappropriate about her, he must write her a certificate of divorce, give it to her, and send her away from his house.

After she leaves his house, she is free to go and become another man's wife.

If the second husband hates her, writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her, and sends her away from his house, or if the second husband who married her dies,

her first husband, who divorced her, cannot marry her again after she has been defiled. That is detestable to Yahweh. You must not bring sin upon the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance.

When a man has just gotten married, he must not go out to war or be given any other public duty. He is to be free to stay at home for one year and bring joy to the wife he has married.

No one should take a handmill or even its upper stone as a security deposit, because that would be taking a person's means of survival.

If a man is found kidnapping any of his fellow Israelites, treating them as a slave, or selling them, that kidnapper must die. In this way, you will remove evil from among you.

Be very careful with any case of a skin disease. Make sure you diligently observe and do everything the Levitical priests instruct you. You must be careful to do exactly as I commanded them.

Remember what Yahweh your God did to Miriam on the way as you were coming out of Egypt.

When you lend anything to your neighbor, you must not go into their house to take something valuable as a guarantee for the loan.

You must stand outside, and the person you are lending to will bring the item they are offering as a guarantee out to you.

If the person is poor, you must not keep their valuable item overnight.

You must return the item to them at sunset so they can sleep in their clothing and bless you. This will be considered a righteous act in the eyes of Yahweh your God.

Do not mistreat a hired worker who is poor and in need, whether they are one of your own people or a foreigner living in your towns.

Pay them their wages on the very same day before the sun sets, because they are poor and desperately depend on it. Otherwise, they might cry out to Yahweh against you, and you would be guilty of sin.

Parents must not be put to death for the sins of their children, nor children for the sins of their parents. Each person will be put to death for their own sin.

Do not deny justice to a foreigner or an orphan, and do not take a widow’s clothing as security for a loan.

Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and Yahweh your God rescued you from there. That is why I am commanding you to do this.

When you harvest your fields and accidentally leave a bundle of grain, do not go back to get it. It should be left for the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in all your work.

When you knock the olives from your trees, do not go back through the branches again. The remaining olives should be for the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows.

When you harvest your vineyard, do not pick up the grapes that fall. They should be for the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows.

Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I am commanding you to do this.
