Deuteronomy

Chapter 22

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

If you see your fellow Israelite's ox or sheep wandering away, do not ignore them. You must be sure to bring them back to your fellow Israelite.

If your fellow Israelite is not nearby, or if you don't know who owns it, then bring it home to your house. Keep it with you until your fellow Israelite comes looking for it, and then you must return it to him.

You must do the same with his donkey, and with his clothes, and with any lost item belonging to your fellow Israelite that you find. You must not ignore it.

If you see your fellow Israelite's donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore them. You must surely help him lift them up again.

A woman must not wear men's clothing, and a man must not put on women's clothing. Anyone who does these things is detestable to Yahweh your God.

If you come across a bird's nest along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young birds or eggs, and the mother bird is sitting on the young or on the eggs, you must not take the mother bird along with her young.

You must let the mother bird go, but you may take the young for yourself. Do this so that things go well for you and you live a long life.

When you build a new house, you must put a railing around your roof so that you don't bring guilt on your house if someone falls from there.

You must not plant your vineyard with two different kinds of seeds, or else both the crop you planted and the fruit of the vineyard will be forfeited to God.

You must not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.

You must not wear clothes made of wool and linen woven together.

You must make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you use to cover yourself.

If a man takes a wife and sleeps with her, but then grows to dislike her,

and he accuses her of shameful things and ruins her reputation by saying, "I married this woman, and when I slept with her, I found no proof that she was a virgin";

then the young woman's father and mother must take the proof of her virginity and bring it to the elders of the city at the city gate.

The young woman's father must tell the elders, "I gave my daughter to this man as his wife, but he has grown to dislike her.

Look, he has accused her of shameful things, saying, 'I found no proof of virginity in your daughter,' but here is the proof of my daughter's virginity." Then they must spread the cloth before the city elders.

The elders of that city must take the man and punish him.

They must fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give it to the young woman's father, because the man ruined the reputation of an Israelite virgin. She will remain his wife, and he may never divorce her as long as he lives.

But if it is true that the proof of the young woman's virginity was not found,

then they must bring the young woman to the door of her father's house. The men of her city must stone her to death because she committed a foolish and shameful act in Israel by acting like a prostitute while living in her father's house. In this way, you must remove this evil from among you.

If a man is caught having sexual relations with a woman who is married to another man, then both of them — the man and the woman — must die. In this way, you must remove this evil from Israel.

If a man in the city finds a young virgin woman who is engaged to be married and has sexual relations with her,

then you must bring both of them to the city gate and stone them to death. The woman must die because she was in the city and did not cry for help, and the man must die because he disgraced another man's engaged wife. In this way, you must remove this evil from among you.

But if the man finds the engaged woman in a field, and he forces her and has sexual relations with her, then only the man who had sex with her must die.

You must do nothing to the woman. There is no sin in her that deserves death because this situation is like when someone attacks another person and murders them.

This is because he found her in the field, and the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her.

If a man finds a virgin woman who is not engaged, and he seizes her and has sexual relations with her, and they are discovered,

then the man who had sex with her must pay the woman's father fifty pieces of silver. She must become his wife because he disgraced her, and he can never divorce her as long as he lives.

A man must not marry his father's wife; he must not dishonor his father's marriage.
