Amos

Chapter 1

Justice and honesty matter to God.

These are the words of Amos, one of the shepherds from Tekoa. He saw these visions concerning Israel during the reigns of Uzziah, king of Judah, and Jeroboam, son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

He said: “Yahweh will roar from Zion and raise his voice from Jerusalem. The shepherds’ pastures will dry up, and the top of Mount Carmel will wither.”

Yahweh says: “For three crimes of Damascus, and even for four, I will not change my mind about punishing them. This is because they crushed Gilead with iron threshing sledges.

So I will send fire on the house of Hazael, and it will burn up the fortresses of Ben Hadad.

I will break down the gates of Damascus and remove the ruler from the Valley of Aven and the one who holds the scepter from Beth Eden. The people of Syria will be taken captive to Kir,” says Yahweh.

Yahweh says: “For three crimes of Gaza, and even for four, I will not change my mind about punishing them. This is because they took an entire community captive and sold them to Edom.

So I will send fire on the wall of Gaza, and it will burn up its fortresses.

I will remove the ruler from Ashdod and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon. I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the rest of the Philistines will die,” says the Lord Yahweh.

Yahweh says: “For three crimes of Tyre, and even for four, I will not change my mind about punishing them. This is because they sold an entire community to Edom and did not remember their treaty of brotherhood.

So I will send fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will burn up its fortresses.”

Yahweh says: “For three crimes of Edom, and even for four, I will not change my mind about punishing them. This is because he relentlessly hunted his brother with a sword, stifled all compassion, and maintained his anger forever, never letting go of his rage.

but I will send fire on Teman that will burn down the palaces of Bozrah.

Yahweh says: “The people of Ammon have sinned three times, and even a fourth, so I will not cancel their punishment. This is because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead to expand their territory.

But I will start a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it will burn down its palaces. There will be shouts on the day of battle, and a storm on the day of the whirlwind.

Their king and his leaders will be taken captive,” says Yahweh.
