Chapter 3

The church begins and spreads.

Peter and John were going to the temple at 3:00 in the afternoon, the time for prayer.

There, a man who had been unable to walk since birth was being carried. People placed him daily at the temple gate called Beautiful, so he could ask for money from those entering the temple.

When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them for money.

Peter, staring at him, along with John, said, "Look at us."

The man paid attention to them, expecting to receive something.

But Peter said, "I don’t have silver or gold, but I will give you what I do have. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!"

Peter took the man by his right hand and helped him up. Immediately, the man's feet and ankles became strong.

He jumped up, stood, and began to walk. He went with them into the temple, walking, jumping, and praising God.

Everyone saw him walking and praising God.

They recognized that he was the same man who used to sit and beg for money at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. They were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

While the man who had been healed held onto Peter and John, all the people ran to them in the area of the temple called Solomon’s Portico, completely amazed.

When Peter saw this, he said to the people, "Men of Israel, why are you so amazed by this man? Why are you staring at us as if we made him walk by our own power or godliness?

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has given glory to his Servant Jesus. You handed Jesus over to be killed, and you rejected him in front of Pilate, even though Pilate had decided to let him go.

But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be released to you instead.

You killed the source of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this.

It is by faith in Jesus' name that this man, whom you see and know, has been made strong. The faith that comes through Jesus has given him this complete healing in front of all of you.

“Now, brothers, I know that you and your rulers acted in ignorance.

But God, through the words of all his prophets, announced long ago that the Messiah would suffer, and he has fulfilled that.

Therefore, change your ways and turn back to God so that your sins may be wiped away, and times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

Then he may send Jesus, the Messiah chosen for you before.

Heaven must keep Jesus until the time when everything is restored, as God spoke about long ago through his holy prophets.

For Moses indeed said to our ancestors, ‘The Lord your God will raise up a prophet for you from among your own people, just like me. You must listen to everything he tells you.

And everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people.’

Also, all the prophets from Samuel onward, as many as have spoken, have foretold these present days.

You are the children of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with our ancestors when he said to Abraham, ‘Through your descendants, all the families of the earth will be blessed.’

After God raised up his servant Jesus, he sent him to you first to bless you by turning each of you away from your wicked ways."
