Chapter 2

The church begins and spreads.

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.

Suddenly, a sound like a strong wind blowing came from the sky and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire separating and resting on each of them.

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them.

There were devout Jews living in Jerusalem from every nation in the world.

When they heard this sound, a crowd gathered and was confused because everyone heard these believers speaking in their own native language.

They were all amazed and wondered, “Look, aren’t all these people who are speaking Galileans?

How is it then that each of us hears them in our own native language?

We are Parthians, Medes, Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia; people from Pontus and Asia;

from Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the areas of Libya around Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both born Jews and converts);

Cretans and Arabs—yet we hear them declaring the mighty works of God in our own languages!”

Everyone was amazed and confused, asking one another, "What does this mean?"

But others made fun of them, saying, "They've had too much new wine."

Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles. He spoke loudly to them, "People of Judea, and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to what I have to say.

These people are not drunk, as you suppose, because it's only nine o'clock in the morning.

Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about:

‘God says, in the last days I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.

Yes, in those days I will pour out my Spirit on my male and female servants, and they will prophesy.

I will show amazing things in the sky above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke.

The sun will turn dark, and the moon will turn blood red, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

"People of Israel, listen to these words! Jesus of Nazareth was a man God approved of, shown to you by the powerful works, wonders, and signs God did through him among you, as you yourselves know.

God had already decided and knew beforehand that Jesus would be handed over. And you, with the help of lawless men, crucified and killed him.

But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the pain of death, because death could not hold him.

For David says about him: ‘I always saw the Lord before me, because he is at my right hand, so I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. My body will also live in hope,

because you will not abandon my soul to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One decay.

You have shown me the ways of life. You will fill me with joy by your presence.’

"Brothers, I can tell you truthfully about the patriarch David: he died and was buried, and his tomb is still with us today.

So David was a prophet, and he knew that God had promised him with an oath that he would place his descendant, the Christ, on his throne.

David saw this beforehand and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, saying that he would not be abandoned to the grave, nor would his body decay."

God raised this Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this.

God has honored Jesus by placing him at his right side. Jesus then received the Holy Spirit from the Father, as had been promised. And Jesus has poured out the Spirit, that you now see and hear.

For David did not go up into heaven, but he himself said, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right side"'

'"until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'

"Therefore, let all the people of Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah."

When the people heard this, their hearts were deeply troubled. They said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?"

Peter replied to them, "Change your hearts and lives. Each of you must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins will be forgiven. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

For this promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away—everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself."

Peter said much more to them, urging and pleading with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation!"

So those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand people were added to their number that day.

They continued to faithfully follow the apostles' teaching and fellowship, sharing meals, and praying.

Everyone was filled with awe, and the apostles performed many wonders and miraculous signs.

All the believers lived together and shared everything they had.

They sold their possessions and belongings and distributed the money to everyone, as anyone had a need.

Every day, they met steadily in the temple as a group, and they ate meals in their homes, sharing food with happy and sincere hearts,

They praised God and were well-regarded by everyone. Each day the Lord added more people to their group—those who were being saved.
