Chapter 12

Living as the church together.

Now concerning spiritual matters, brothers and sisters, I don't want you to be uninformed.

You know that when you were not believers, you were led astray to silent idols, however you happened to be led.

Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking by God's Spirit says, "Jesus is cursed." And no one can truly say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.

There are different ways to serve, but the same Lord is served.

There are different ways God works, but the same God works in all people in every way.

The Spirit's presence is shown in each person for the good of all.

To one person the Spirit gives a message of wisdom, to another the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge,

to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another the ability to tell spirits apart, to another different kinds of languages, and to still another the interpretation of languages.

But one and the same Spirit does all these things, distributing them to each person as he chooses.

Just as a body is one unit and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, even though there are many, form one body, so it is with Christ.

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Indeed, the body is not made up of one part but of many.

If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body.

And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body.

If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?

But in fact God has placed each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted them to be.

If all were one part, where would the body be?

As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!"

On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem weaker are actually very important.

And the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. The parts that are not presentable are treated with special modesty,

while our presentable parts don't need such care. But God designed the body to work together, giving more honor to the parts that seemed less important,

so that there would be no division in the body, but that all the parts would care equally for each other.

If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it. If one part is honored, all the parts rejoice with it.

Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a part of it.

God has appointed some in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then those who perform miracles, then those with gifts of healing, those who help, those who govern, and those who speak in various languages.

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all perform miracles?

Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in various languages? Do all interpret?

But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you an even better way.
