Corinthians

Chapter 11

Living as the church together.

Imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.

I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold on to the teachings exactly as I passed them on to you.

But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, the man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of Christ.

Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.

But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head; it’s the same as if her head were shaved.

For if a woman doesn’t cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.

A man should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man.

Because man did not come from woman, but woman from man;

because man was not created for the woman, but woman for the man.

For this reason, a woman should have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.

However, in the Lord, woman is not independent of man, and man is not independent of woman.

For just as woman came from man, so also man is born through woman. But everything comes from God.

Decide for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God without covering her head?

Doesn’t even common sense tell you that if a man has long hair, it’s a disgrace to him?

But if a woman has long hair, it is her glory, for her hair is given to her as a covering.

However, if anyone wants to argue about this, we (I mean the apostles) don't have such a custom, and neither do God's churches.

But in giving you these instructions, I don't praise you, because when you meet, it does more harm than good.

First, when you gather as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it.

In fact, there must be divisions among you so that those who are truly approved can be recognized.

So when you meet together, what you're doing isn't really eating the Lord's Supper.

Because when you eat, each person takes their own meal first. As a result, some go hungry, while others get drunk.

Don't you have homes where you can eat and drink? Or do you disrespect God's church and shame those who have nothing? What should I tell you? Should I praise you for this? No, I do not praise you.

For I passed on to you what I received from the Lord himself: that on the night Jesus was betrayed, he took bread.

And after giving thanks, he broke it and said, “Take, eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, after supper, he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new agreement confirmed in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he returns.

Therefore, anyone who eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

Everyone should examine themselves before eating the bread and drinking from the cup.

For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on themselves.

That is why many of you are weak and sick, and quite a few have died.

But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged.

However, when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the rest of the world.

So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather for a meal, wait for each other.

If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home, so that your gathering doesn't bring judgment on yourselves. I will take care of the other matters when I come.
