1Now, as for the people of Israel, their numbers, the family heads, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king, were organized into divisions that came and went month by month throughout the year. Each division consisted of 24,000 men.
2Jashobeam son of Zabdiel was in charge of the first division for the first month, and his division had 24,000 men.
3He was from the family of Perez and was the chief of all the army commanders for the first month.
4Dodai the Ahohite and his division were in charge for the second month, with Mikloth as the leader. His division also had 24,000 men.
5Benaiah, son of Jehoiada the priest, who was chief, was the third army commander for the third month, and his division had 24,000 men.
6This was Benaiah, a strong warrior among the thirty, and the leader of the thirty. His son Ammizabad was in his division.
7The fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel, Joab's brother. His son Zebadiah succeeded him, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
8The fifth captain for the fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
9The sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira, son of Ikkesh, from Tekoa, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
10The seventh captain for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, from the descendants of Ephraim, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
11The eighth captain for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, from the Zerahites, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
12The ninth captain for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite, from the Benjaminites, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
13The tenth captain for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, from the Zerahites, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
14The eleventh captain for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, from the descendants of Ephraim, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
15The twelfth captain for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, from Othniel's family, and his division had twenty-four thousand men.
16The leaders over the tribes of Israel were: for the Reubenites, Eliezer son of Zichri; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah son of Maacah;
17for Levi, Hashabiah son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok;
18for Judah, Elihu, one of David's brothers; for Issachar, Omri son of Michael;
19for Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jeremoth son of Azriel;
20for the descendants of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Azaziah; for half of the tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah;
21for half of the tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner;
22for Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
23But David did not count the people who were twenty years old and under, because Yahweh had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.
24Joab, son of Zeruiah, began to take a census, but he did not finish it. As a result, trouble came upon Israel. The final number was not recorded in the chronicles of King David.
25Azmaveth, son of Adiel, was in charge of the king's treasuries. Jonathan, son of Uzziah, was in charge of the treasuries in the fields, cities, villages, and towers.
26Ezri, son of Chelub, was in charge of those who farmed the land.
27Shimei the Ramathite was in charge of the vineyards. Zabdi the Shiphmite was in charge of the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars.
28Baal Hanan the Gederite was in charge of the olive trees and sycamore trees in the lowlands. Joash was in charge of the olive oil cellars.
29Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge of the herds that grazed in Sharon. Shaphat, son of Adlai, was in charge of the herds in the valleys.
30Obil the Ishmaelite was in charge of the camels. Jehdeiah the Meronothite was in charge of the donkeys. Jaziz the Hagrite was in charge of the flocks.
31All of these people were in charge of King David’s property.
32Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe. Jehiel, Hachmoni’s son, was with the king’s sons.
33Ahithophel was the king’s advisor, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s close friend.
34After Ahithophel, Jehoiada, Benaiah’s son, and Abiathar served as advisors. Joab was the commander of the king’s army.
