Revelation

Chapter 3

How the story ends — and begins.

Write this to the angel of the church in Sardis: “The one who holds the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars says this: I know what you have been doing. You have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead.

Wake up! Strengthen what little you have left, which is about to die, because I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.

Remember, then, how you received and heard the message. Obey it and change your ways. If you do not stay watchful, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.

Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not stained their clothes. They will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.

I will dress those who win in white clothes. I will never erase their names from the Book of Life. I will also acknowledge their names to my Father and to his angels.

If you have ears, then listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.

Write to the angel of the church in Philadelphia: “The One who is holy and true, the One who holds the key of David—what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open—says this:

I know your actions. Look, I have put an open door in front of you that no one can shut. I know you have little strength, but you have obeyed my teaching and have not disowned my name.

Listen, I will make those from the synagogue of Satan—those who claim to be Jews but are not, rather they lie—I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and they will know that I have loved you.

Because you have kept my command to persevere, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is coming to the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

I am coming soon! Hold on to what you have, so that no one takes your crown.

I will make the one who overcomes a pillar in the temple of my God, and they will never leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God. And I will also write my new name on them.

If you have ears, then listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.

Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea: “The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Ruler of God’s creation, says this:

I know your actions, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot!

So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.

I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so you can become truly rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

I correct and discipline those whom I love. So be earnest and change your ways.

Look! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me.

To the one who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.

If you have ears, then listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.”
