Chapter 56

Songs and prayers for every feeling.

For the worship leader. To the tune of “Silent Dove in Distant Lands.” A poem by David, when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Be merciful to me, God, for people want to devour me. All day long, they attack and oppress me.

My enemies want to devour me all day long, because many proudly fight against me.

When I am afraid, I will trust in you.

In God, I praise his word. In God, I trust. I will not be afraid. What can mere humans do to me?

All day long they twist my words. All their thoughts are against me for evil.

They conspire and hide, watching my every move, eager to take my life.

Should they escape because of their wickedness? God, angrily bring down the nations.

You keep track of my wanderings. You collect my tears in your bottle. Aren’t they recorded in your book?

Then my enemies will turn back on the day I call out to you. I know this: God is on my side.

I will praise God for his word. I will praise Yahweh for his word.

I trust in God. I will not be afraid. What can mere humans do to me?

God, I owe you my promises. I will bring you thank offerings.

Because you have saved me from death and kept me from falling, I can now live in God's presence, in the light of life.
