By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yes, we cried when we remembered Jerusalem.
We hung our harps on the willow trees in that land.
Because there, those who captured us asked us for songs. Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy: “Sing us one of the songs of Jerusalem!”
How can we sing Yahweh’s song in a foreign land?
If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand lose its skill.
May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I don’t remember you; if I don’t love Jerusalem more than my greatest joy.
Yahweh, remember against the people of Edom the day Jerusalem fell, when they said, “Tear it down! Tear it down to its foundations!”
Daughter of Babylon, who will be destroyed, happy is the one who repays you for what you did to us.
Happy is the one who seizes your infants and smashes them against the rocks.
