Proverbs

Chapter 18

Wisdom for everyday life.

Someone who is unfriendly only cares about themselves and ignores all good advice.

A foolish person doesn't care about understanding, they just want to express their own opinions.

When wickedness appears, disrespect follows, and with shame comes disgrace.

A person's words can be as deep as water, and the source of wisdom is like a flowing stream.

It is not good to favor the wicked, or to deny justice to the innocent.

A foolish person's words lead to arguments, and whatever they say invites trouble.

A foolish person's mouth is their downfall, and their words are a trap for them.

Gossip is like tasty treats: it goes deep into a person's inner being.

Someone who is lazy in their work is just like someone who destroys things.

Yahweh's name is like a strong tower; those who do right run to him and are safe.

A rich person imagines their wealth is like a strong, unscalable city wall.

A person's heart is proud before they fall, but humility comes before honor.

If someone gives an answer before listening, it is foolish and shameful.

A person’s inner strength can help them through sickness, but who can endure a broken spirit?

An understanding person seeks knowledge, and a wise person listens for knowledge.

A person’s gift can open doors for them and bring them before important people.

The person who presents their case first always seems right, until someone else comes and questions them.

Drawing lots settles disagreements and keeps powerful people from fighting.

An offended relative is harder to win over than a fortified city; arguments are like the locked bars of a fortress.

A person is satisfied by the words they speak.

Words have the power of life and death; those who love to talk will face the consequences of their words.

Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing and receives favor from Yahweh.

The poor beg for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.

Having many friends can lead to ruin, but there is a true friend who is more loyal than a brother.
