Chapter 9

Israel's long journey through the desert.

Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had left the land of Egypt, saying,

"Also, the Israelites must celebrate the Passover at its appointed time.

You must celebrate it on the fourteenth day of this month, in the evening, at its appointed time. You must celebrate it according to all its rules and regulations."

Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover.

They celebrated the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, in the wilderness of Sinai. The Israelites did everything just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

However, there were some men who were ritually unclean because they had touched a dead body. Because of this, they couldn't celebrate the Passover on the proper day. So, they approached Moses and Aaron on that day.

These men said to Moses, "We are unclean because we touched a dead body. Why should we be prevented from presenting Yahweh's offering at its appointed time along with the other Israelites?"

Moses answered them, "Wait here while I find out what Yahweh will command concerning you."

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

"Tell the Israelites: 'If any of you or your descendants become unclean because of a dead body or are on a long journey, you may still celebrate the Passover to Yahweh.'

'You must celebrate it in the second month, on the fourteenth day, in the evening. You must eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.'

'You must not leave any of it until morning, nor break any of its bones. You must observe all the regulations for the Passover.'

'But if someone is clean and not on a journey, yet fails to celebrate the Passover, that person will be cut off from their people. Because they did not present Yahweh's offering at its appointed time, they will be held responsible for their sin.'

'If a foreigner living among you wants to celebrate the Passover to Yahweh, they must follow all the rules and regulations of the Passover. You will have the same law for both the foreigner and for those born in the land.'"

On the day the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered it, specifically the Tent of the Testimony. In the evening, the cloud over the tabernacle looked like fire until morning.

This happened continually. The cloud covered it during the day, and at night it looked like fire.

Whenever the cloud lifted from over the Tent, the Israelites would travel. In the place where the cloud settled, there the Israelites would set up camp.

The Israelites traveled when Yahweh commanded and camped when Yahweh commanded. As long as the cloud remained on the tabernacle, they stayed in camp.

If the cloud stayed on the tabernacle for many days, the Israelites obeyed Yahweh's command and did not travel.

Sometimes the cloud stayed on the tabernacle for only a few days. Then, according to Yahweh's command, they remained in camp, and according to Yahweh's command, they traveled.

Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening until morning; when the cloud lifted in the morning, they traveled. Whether it was day or night, when the cloud lifted, they traveled.

Whether the cloud stayed on the tabernacle for two days, a month, or a year, the Israelites remained in camp and did not travel. But when it lifted, they packed up and traveled.

They camped at Yahweh's command and traveled at Yahweh's command. They obeyed Yahweh's command through Moses.
