“Speak to the people of Israel and tell them: ‘When you cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan,

you must drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you. You must destroy all their stone idols, destroy all their metal images, and tear down all their places of worship.

You are to take possession of the land and live in it, because I have given you the land to own.

You will inherit the land by drawing lots, according to your families. You will give a larger inheritance to the larger families and a smaller inheritance to the smaller families. Wherever the lot falls for someone, that will be his. You will inherit according to your ancestral tribes.

But if you do not drive out the people who live in the land, then those you allow to remain will be like sharp objects in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will cause you trouble in the land where you live.

Then I will do to you exactly what I had planned to do to them.”
