1After the disaster, Yahweh spoke to Moses and Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest. He said,
2"Count all the people in the community of Israel, all the men twenty years old or older, grouped by their families. These are all the men in Israel who are able to go to war."
3So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with the people in the plains of Moab, near the Jordan River at Jericho. They said,
4"Count everyone twenty years old or older, just as Yahweh commanded Moses and the people of Israel." These were the people who had come out of Egypt.
5Reuben, Israel's firstborn son. Reuben's sons were: Hanoch, from whom came the Hanochite family; Pallu, from whom came the Palluite family;
6Hezron, from whom came the Hezronite family; and Carmi, from whom came the Carmite family.
7These were the families of the Reubenites. The total number counted from them was 43,730.
8Pallu's son was Eliab.
9Eliab's sons were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram were the ones chosen by the community who rebelled against Moses and Aaron, joining Korah's group when they rebelled against Yahweh.
10Then the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah when that group died. At the same time, fire consumed 250 men, and this became a warning sign.
11However, Korah's sons did not die.
12The sons of Simeon, listed by their families, were: Nemuel, from whom came the Nemuelite family; Jamin, from whom came the Jaminite family; Jachin, from whom came the Jachinite family;
13Zerah, from whom came the Zerahite family; and Shaul, from whom came the Shaulite family.
14These were the families of the Simeonites. The total number counted was 22,200.
15The sons of Gad, listed by their families, were: Zephon, from whom came the Zephonite family; Haggi, from whom came the Haggite family; Shuni, from whom came the Shunite family;
16from Ozni, came the Ozni family; from Eri, came the Eri family;
17from Arod, came the Arod family; from Areli, came the Areli family.
18These are the Gad families, counted by their members, totaling 40,500.
19Judah's sons were Er and Onan. Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.
20Judah's sons, according to their families, were: from Shelah, the Shelah family; from Perez, the Perez family; from Zerah, the Zerah family.
21Perez's sons were: from Hezron, the Hezron family; from Hamul, the Hamul family.
22These are the Judah families, counted by their members, totaling 76,500.
23Issachar's sons, according to their families, were: from Tola, the Tola family; from Puvah, the Puni family;
24from Jashub, the Jashub family; from Shimron, the Shimron family.
25These are the Issachar families, counted by their members, totaling 64,300.
26The families descended from Zebulun were: the Seredites, from Sered; the Elonites, from Elon; and the Jahleelites, from Jahleel.
27These were the families of the Zebulunites, and their total number was 60,500.
28The sons of Joseph, according to their families, were Manasseh and Ephraim.
29The sons of Manasseh: From Machir came the Machirites; Machir was the father of Gilead, and from Gilead came the Gileadites.
30These were the sons of Gilead: From Iezer came the Iezerites; from Helek came the Helekites;
31from Asriel came the Asrielites; from Shechem came the Shechemites;
32from Shemida came the Shemidaites; and from Hepher came the Hepherites.
33Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, had no sons, only daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
34These were the families of Manasseh, and their total number was 52,700.
35These were the sons of Ephraim, according to their families: From Shuthelah came the Shuthelahites; from Becher came the Becherites; and from Tahan came the Tahanites.
36These were the sons of Shuthelah: The Eranites came from Eran.
37These were the families of Ephraim's sons, and their total number was 32,500. These were the sons of Joseph, according to their families.
38The sons of Benjamin, according to their families, were: from Bela, the Belaites; from Ashbel, the Ashbelites; from Ahiram, the Ahiramites;
39from Shephupham, the Shuphamites; and from Hupham, the Huphamites.
40Bela's sons were Ard and Naaman. From Ard came the Ardites, and from Naaman came the Naamites.
41These were the sons of Benjamin, according to their families, and their total number was 45,600.
42The sons of Dan, according to their families, were: from Shuham, the Shuhamites. These were the families of Dan.
43All the families of the Shuhamites totaled 64,400.
44The sons of Asher, according to their families, were: from Imnah, the Imnites; from Ishvi, the Ishvites; and from Beriah, the Berites.
45The sons of Beriah were: from Heber, the Heberites; and from Malchiel, the Malchielites.
46Asher also had a daughter named Serah.
47These were the families of Asher's sons, and their total number was 53,400.
48The sons of Naphtali, according to their families, were: from Jahzeel, the Jahzeelites; from Guni, the Gunites;
49from Jezer, the Jezerites; and from Shillem, the Shillemites.
50These were the families of Naphtali, and their total number was 45,400.
51The number of Israelites counted was 601,730.
52Yahweh said to Moses,
53"The land will be divided among these people as their inheritance, based on the number of individuals.
54You are to give more inheritance to larger groups and less inheritance to smaller groups. Everyone will receive an inheritance based on how many people were counted in their group.
55However, the land will be divided by drawing lots. They will inherit according to the names of their ancestors' tribes.
56Their inheritance will be divided by lot, whether the group is large or small."
57These are the Levites who were counted by their families: the Gershonite family from Gershon, the Kohathite family from Kohath, and the Merarite family from Merari.
58These are the families of Levi: the Libnite family, the Hebronite family, the Mahlite family, the Mushite family, and the Korahite family. Kohath was the father of Amram.
59Amram's wife was Jochebed, Levi's daughter, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She gave birth to Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60Aaron had sons named Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
61Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before Yahweh.
62The number of Levite males, a month old and older, who were counted was 23,000. They were not counted with the other Israelites because they did not receive an inheritance among the other Israelites.
63These are the people Moses and Eleazar the priest counted among the Israelites on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan River near Jericho.
64But among these people, there was no one who had been counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai.
65For Yahweh had said about them, "They will certainly die in the wilderness." None of them were left, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
