Chapter 2

Israel's long journey through the desert.

Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron,

"The people of Israel will camp, each man under his own banner, with the flags of their family groups. They will camp at a distance around the Tent of Meeting."

"Those who camp on the east side, toward the sunrise, will be from the division of the camp of Judah. The leader of the people of Judah will be Nahshon, son of Amminadab."

His division, and those counted in it, totaled seventy-four thousand six hundred.

"Next to him will camp the tribe of Issachar. The leader of the people of Issachar will be Nethanel, son of Zuar."

His division, and those counted in it, totaled fifty-four thousand four hundred.

"Then the tribe of Zebulun. The leader of the people of Zebulun will be Eliab, son of Helon."

His division, and those counted in it, totaled fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

All those counted in the camp of Judah totaled one hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred, according to their divisions. They will be the first to set out.

"On the south side will be the banner of the camp of Reuben, according to their divisions. The leader of the people of Reuben will be Elizur, son of Shedeur."

His division, and those counted in it, totaled forty-six thousand five hundred.

The Simeon tribe will camp next to him. Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai, will be the leader of the Simeonites.

His division, including those who were counted, totaled 59,300.

The Gad tribe will be led by Eliasaph, son of Reuel, the prince of the Gadites.

His division, including those who were counted, totaled 45,650.

The total number of those counted in Reuben's camp was 151,450, organized into their armies. They will be the second group to move out.

Then the Meeting Tent will move, with the camp of the Levites in the middle of all the other camps. They will move out in the same order they camped, each man in his place, following their banners.

On the west side will be the banner of the Ephraim camp, organized by their divisions. Elishama, son of Ammihud, will be the leader of the Ephraimites.

His division, including those who were counted, totaled 40,500.

Next to him will be the Manasseh tribe. Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, will be the leader of the Manassehites.

His division, including those who were counted, totaled 32,200.

The Benjamin tribe will be led by Abidan, son of Gideoni, the prince of the Benjaminites.

His army, including those who were counted, totaled 35,400.

The total number of those counted in Ephraim's camp was 108,100, organized by their divisions. They will be the third group to move out.

On the north side will be the banner of the Dan camp, organized by their divisions. Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai, will be the leader of the Danites.

His division, including those who were counted, totaled 62,700.

The Asher tribe will camp next to him. Pagiel, son of Ochran, will be the leader of the Asherites.

His division, including those who were counted, totaled 41,500.

The Naphtali tribe will be led by Ahira, son of Enan, the prince of the Naphtalites.

His division, including those who were counted, totaled 53,400.

The total number of those counted in Dan's camp was 157,600. They will be the last group to move out, following their banners.

The total number of male Israelites, counted by their family groups, was 603,550. This includes all who were counted in the camps, organized by their divisions.

However, the Levites were not counted among the other Israelites, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

So the Israelites did everything Yahweh commanded Moses. They set up their camps according to their tribal flags and marched out, every family following their own ancestral group.
