Nehemiah

Chapter 7

Rebuilding the broken walls.

After the wall was built, I set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed,

I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah, the commander of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem. Hananiah was a trustworthy man who respected God more than many others.

I told them, “Don’t open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot. While the guards are on duty, have them close and bar the doors. Appoint watchmen from the people of Jerusalem, each for his own post and near his own house.”

The city was large and spread out, but there were few people living in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.

My God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the officials, and the people so they could be listed by their family lines. I found a record of the family lines of those who were among the first to return, and this is what I found written in it:

These are the people from the province who came back from captivity. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had taken them away, and they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.

They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. This is the number of the men of the people of Israel:

From Jericho, three hundred forty-five descendants.

From Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred twenty-one descendants.

The priests: From Jedaiah, of the family of Jeshua, nine hundred seventy-three.

The people from Immer numbered 1,052.

The people from Pashhur numbered 1,247.

The people from Harim numbered 1,017.

The Levites: the people from Jeshua, Kadmiel, and Hodevah numbered 74.

The singers: the people from Asaph numbered 148.

The gatekeepers: the people from Shallum, Ater, Talmon, Akkub, Hatita, and Shobai numbered 138.

The temple servants: the people from Ziha, Hasupha, and Tabbaoth,

the people from Keros, Sia, and Padon,

the people from Lebana, Hagaba, and Salmai,

the people from Hanan, Giddel, and Gahar,

the people from Reaiah, Rezin, and Nekoda,

the people from Gazzam, Uzza, and Paseah.

The people from Besai, Meunim, and Nephushesim,

the people from Bakbuk, Hakupha, and Harhur,

the people from Bazlith, Mehida, and Harsha,

the people from Barkos, Sisera, and Temah,

the people from Neziah and Hatipha.

The descendants of Solomon’s servants: the people from Sotai, Sophereth, and Perida,

the people from Jaala, Darkon, and Giddel,

the people from Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth Hazzebaim, and Amon.

The total number of temple servants and the descendants of Solomon’s servants was three hundred ninety-two.

These people came from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer. However, they could not prove their family lineage or if they were truly Israelites.

That included the descendants of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda, totaling six hundred forty-two people.

Regarding the priests, there were the descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai. This Barzillai had married one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and his line was named after him.

These priests searched for their family records but couldn’t find them. Because of this, they were considered unfit and removed from the priesthood.

The governor instructed that they should not eat any of the most sacred food until a priest could serve with the Urim and Thummim (sacred objects used for divine guidance).

The entire community together totaled forty-two thousand three hundred sixty people.

In addition to that, there were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven male and female servants, and two hundred forty-five male and female singers.

They had seven hundred thirty-six horses, two hundred forty-five mules,

four hundred thirty-five camels, and six thousand seven hundred twenty donkeys.

Some of the family leaders contributed to the work. The governor donated one thousand gold coins (darics), fifty basins, and five hundred thirty priestly garments to the treasury.

Some of the family leaders also contributed twenty thousand gold coins (darics) and two thousand two hundred silver coins (minas) to the work’s treasury.

What the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand gold coins (darics), two thousand silver coins (minas), and sixty-seven priestly garments.

So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all the people of Israel settled in their cities. By the seventh month, the people of Israel were in their cities.
