Chapter 3

Rebuilding the broken walls.

1Then Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests began to build the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and installed its doors, dedicating it all the way to the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel.

2Next to them, the men of Jericho built. Next to them, Zaccur son of Imri built.

3Hassenaah’s sons built the Fish Gate. They put in its beams and set up its doors, bolts, and bars.

4Next to them, Meremoth, son of Uriah and grandson of Hakkoz, made repairs. Next to them, Meshullam, son of Berechiah and grandson of Meshezabel, made repairs. Next to them, Zadok, son of Baana, made repairs.

5Next to them, the Tekoites also made repairs, but their leaders did not help with the Lord’s work.

6Joiada, son of Paseah, and Meshullam, son of Besodeiah, repaired the Old Gate. They put in its beams and set up its doors, bolts, and bars.

7Next to them, Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite, men from Gibeon and Mizpah, repaired the official residence of the governor of the region beyond the Euphrates River.

8Next to him, Uzziel, son of Harhaiah, a goldsmith, made repairs. Next to him, Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs. They strengthened Jerusalem up to the Wide Wall.

9Next to them, Rephaiah, son of Hur, who ruled half of the district of Jerusalem, made repairs.

10Next to them, Jedaiah, son of Harumaph, made repairs across from his own house. Next to him, Hattush, son of Hashabneiah, made repairs.

11Malchijah, son of Harim, and Hasshub, son of Pahathmoab, repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens.

12Next to him, Shallum, son of Hallohesh, who ruled half of the district of Jerusalem, made repairs with his daughters.

13Hanun and the people of Zanoah repaired the valley gate. They rebuilt it, installed its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and also repaired one thousand cubits of the wall leading to the dung gate.

14Malchijah, the son of Rechab and ruler of the district of Beth Haccherem, repaired the dung gate. He rebuilt it and installed its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

15Shallun, the son of Colhozeh and ruler of the district of Mizpah, repaired the spring gate. He rebuilt it, covered it, and installed its doors, its bolts, and its bars. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Shelah by the king’s garden, all the way to the stairs that lead down from David’s City.

16After him, Nehemiah, the son of Azbuk and ruler of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs to the area opposite David’s tombs, and to the man-made pool, and to the house of the mighty men.

17After him, the Levites, Rehum, the son of Bani, made repairs. Next to him, Hashabiah, the ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district.

18After Hashabiah, their relatives, Bavvai, the son of Henadad and ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs.

19Next to him, Ezer, the son of Jeshua and ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section, across from the path leading up to the armory, at the bend in the wall.

20After him, Baruch, the son of Zabbai, diligently repaired another section, from the bend in the wall to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.

21After him, Meremoth, the son of Uriah and grandson of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the door of Eliashib’s house to the very end of Eliashib's house.

22After him, the priests, the men of the Plain, made repairs.

23After them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs across from their own house. After them, Azariah, the son of Maaseiah and grandson of Ananiah, made repairs next to his own house.

24After him, Binnui, the son of Henadad, repaired another section, from Azariah’s house to the bend in the wall, and to the corner.

25Palal, the son of Uzai, made repairs opposite the bend in the wall, and the tower that projects from the king’s upper palace, which is near the guardhouse. After him, Pedaiah, the son of Parosh, made repairs.

26(The temple servants lived in Ophel, facing the water gate to the east, and the projecting tower.)

27After him, the people of Tekoa repaired another section, facing the large projecting tower, and to the wall of Ophel.

28Above the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, each one working on the section directly across from his own house.

29After them, Zadok son of Immer repaired the section across from his own house. After him, Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, who guarded the East Gate, made repairs.

30After him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. After him, Meshullam son of Berechiah repaired the section across from his own room.

31After him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths who worked for the temple servants, and one of the merchants, made repairs opposite the Gate of Hammiphkad and up to the ascent of the corner.

32Between the ascent of the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.
