Matthew

Chapter 4

Jesus, the promised King.

Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert so the devil could tempt him.

After Jesus had fasted for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

The tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

But Jesus answered, "It is written, 'People will not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.

He said to Jesus, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you,' and 'They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not hit your foot against a stone.'"

Jesus said to him, "It is also written: 'Do not test the Lord your God.'"

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

And he said, "I will give you all of this if you will bow down and worship me."

Then Jesus said to him, "Get away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'"

Then the devil left him, and angels came and took care of him.

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he went away to Galilee.

He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum, a town by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.

This happened to fulfill what Isaiah the prophet had spoken:

"The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—

The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned."

From that time on, Jesus began to preach, saying, "Turn away from your sins, because the Kingdom of Heaven is near."

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

He said to them, "Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people."

At once, they left their nets and followed him.

Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them.

and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

News about him spread all over Syria. People brought to him all who were sick with various diseases and pains, those tormented by demons, those with seizures, and those who were paralyzed; and he healed them.

Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Ten Cities, Jerusalem, Judea, and the region across the Jordan River.
