Matthew

Chapter 16

Jesus, the promised King.

The Pharisees and Sadducees approached Jesus and, trying to test him, asked him to show them a miraculous sign from heaven.

But he replied, "When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be good weather, because the sky is red.’

And in the morning, ‘It will be bad weather today, because the sky is red and looks threatening.’ You fakes! You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you can't interpret the signs of these times!

A wicked and unfaithful generation looks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." Then he left them and went away.

When the disciples crossed to the other side, they realized they had forgotten to bring bread.

Jesus told them, "Be careful and watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

They started discussing among themselves, saying, "It's because we didn't bring any bread."

Jesus, knowing what they were thinking, asked, "Why are you discussing among yourselves, you people of little faith, that you have no bread?

Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand people, and how many baskets you collected?

Or the seven loaves for the four thousand people, and how many baskets you collected?

How is it that you don't understand that I wasn't talking to you about bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

Then they understood that he was not telling them to beware of bread yeast, but of the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

When Jesus arrived in the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I, the Son of Man, am?"

They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Jesus replied to him, "You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because no human being revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.

I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the power of death will not overcome it.

I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven."

Then he ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was Jesus the Christ.

From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and religious scholars. He told them he would be killed, and on the third day he would be raised to life.

Peter took him aside and began to scold him, saying, "Never, Lord! This will never happen to you!"

But Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get away from me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me, because your thoughts are not God's thoughts, but human thoughts."

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone wants to follow me, they must deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow me.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

What good will it do someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their life? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their life?

For the Son of Man will come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will repay each person according to what they have done.

I tell you the truth, some standing here will not die until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom."
