Mark

Chapter 9

Jesus in action, fast and powerful.

He said to them, "I tell you the truth, some people standing here will not die until they see God's Kingdom come with power."

Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him and led them up a high mountain to be alone. There, he was transformed in front of them.

His clothes became dazzling white, so incredibly white that no one on earth could bleach them to be so light.

Elijah and Moses appeared to them, and they were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Teacher, it’s good for us to be here. Let’s set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

He didn’t know what to say because they were all very scared.

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

Suddenly, they looked around but saw no one else with them, only Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

They kept this to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” could mean.

They asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

He told them, “Elijah does come first and puts everything back in order. But how is it written about the Son of Man that he must suffer greatly and be treated with contempt?

But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and people did to him whatever they wanted, just as the Scriptures said would happen to him.”

When they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.

As soon as the crowd saw Jesus, they were completely amazed and ran to greet him.

He asked the teachers of the law, “What are you arguing with them about?”

A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who has a spirit that makes him unable to speak.

And whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes stiff. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”

Jesus replied, “You faithless generation, how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.”

So they brought the boy to him. As soon as the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” The father answered, “Since he was a child.

It has often thrown him into fire and water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, please have pity on us and help us.”

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, anything is possible for the one who believes.”

Immediately the boy’s father cried out with tears, “I do believe! Help me overcome my unbelief!”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he ordered the evil spirit, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again!”

The spirit screamed, threw the boy into a severe convulsion, and then came out of him. The boy looked as if he were dead, so much so that most people said, “He’s dead.”

But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and the boy stood.

After Jesus went into the house, his disciples privately asked him, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

He told them, “This kind can only be driven out by prayer and fasting.”

Jesus and his disciples left there and went through Galilee. He didn’t want anyone to know where they were,

because he was teaching his disciples. He told them, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over to human hands, and they will kill him. After he is killed, on the third day he will rise again.”

But they didn’t understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him.

They came to Capernaum. Once he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”

But they remained silent because they had been arguing among themselves on the way about who was the most important.

Jesus sat down, called the twelve disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

He took a small child and had him stand among them. Then he took the child in his arms and said to them,

“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes not only me but also the one who sent me.”

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone who was not one of us driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he doesn’t follow us.”

But Jesus said, “Don’t stop him, because no one who performs a miracle in my name can quickly speak evil of me.

For whoever is not against us is for us.

Truly, I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ, will certainly not lose his reward.

“But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter eternal life crippled than to have two hands and go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire,

‘where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’

If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into eternal life limping than to have both your feet and be thrown into Gehenna, into the fire that will never be put out—

‘where their worm never dies, and the fire is never put out.’

If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter God’s Kingdom with one eye than to have both your eyes and be thrown into the Gehenna of fire,

‘where their worm never dies, and the fire is never put out.’

For everyone will be fire-tested, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.

Salt is good, but if salt loses its flavor, how can you make it salty again? Have salt within yourselves and be at peace with each other.
