They arrived on the other side of the sea, in the region of the Gadarenes.
As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came out from the tombs and met him.
This man lived among the tombs. No one could tie him up anymore, not even with chains,
because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he would break the chains apart and smash the shackles. No one was strong enough to control him.
Night and day, he was always in the tombs and in the mountains, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him,
and shouting loudly, he said, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you by God, don't torture me!"
For Jesus had already said to him, "Come out of the man, you evil spirit!"
Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He answered, "My name is Legion, because there are many of us."
He pleaded with Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.
Now on the nearby hillside, there was a large herd of pigs feeding.
All the demons begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs so we can enter them."
Immediately Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand of them, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
The people who were feeding the pigs ran away and told everyone in the city and the countryside. So people came out to see what had happened.
They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by demons—the one who had the 'Legion'—sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and about the pigs.
Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their area.
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged to go with him.
But Jesus did not let him go. Instead, he told him, "Go home to your family and tell them all the great things the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you."
So the man left and began to announce throughout the Ten Cities area how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.
When Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was standing by the sea.
Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet,
and pleaded with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and place your hands on her so she can get well and live."
Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed, pressing in on him from all sides.
A certain woman who had been bleeding for twelve years
had suffered many things from many doctors. She had spent all she had, but instead of getting better, she had grown worse.
She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes.
For she thought, "If I can just touch his clothes, I will be healed."
Immediately, her bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was cured of her suffering.
At once, Jesus, realizing that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"
His disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you ask, 'Who touched me?'"
He looked around to see who had done this.
But the woman, fearful and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be free from your illness."
While he was still speaking, messengers arrived from the synagogue leader’s house, saying, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any further?"
But Jesus, ignoring what they said, immediately told the synagogue leader, "Don’t be afraid; just believe."
He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James, and John, James’s brother.
When they arrived at the synagogue leader’s house, Jesus saw a commotion with people crying and wailing loudly.
When he went inside, he said to them, "Why are you causing a commotion and crying? The child is not dead, but is asleep."
They laughed at him. But he put them all out, and took the child's father, mother, and those who were with him, and went in where the child was lying.
Taking the child's hand, he said to her, "Talitha cumi!" (which means, when translated, "Little girl, I tell you, get up!")
Immediately the girl got up and walked around, for she was twelve years old. They were completely astonished.
He strictly ordered them not to let anyone know this, and told them that she should be given something to eat.
