Mark

Chapter 16

Jesus in action, fast and powerful.

After the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought perfumed spices to go and anoint Jesus' body.

Very early on the first day of the week, just as the sun was rising, they went to the tomb.

They were saying to each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb for us?"

When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.

When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were astonished.

He said to them, "Don't be amazed. You are looking for Jesus, the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. Look, here is the place where they laid him!

But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'"

They went out and fled from the tomb, because they were trembling and filled with fear. They didn't say anything to anyone, because they were afraid.

After Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.

She went and told those who had been with Jesus, as they were sad and crying.

When they heard that he was alive and that she had seen him, they didn't believe it.

After these things, Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them as they walked into the countryside.

They went and told the others, but the others didn't believe them either.

Later, Jesus appeared to the eleven disciples themselves while they were eating. He criticized them for their disbelief and stubbornness because they hadn't believed those who saw him after he had risen.

He told them, "Go into all the world and tell the Good News to everyone.

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever doesn't believe will be condemned.

These signs will happen for those who believe: In my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new languages;

they will pick up snakes; and if they drink any deadly poison, it won't harm them. They will place their hands on sick people, and the sick will recover."

So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right side of God.

The disciples went out and preached everywhere. The Lord worked with them, confirming his message with the signs that followed. Amen.
