When all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings by the sea heard how Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their courage failed, and they were terrified because of the Israelites.
At that time, Yahweh said to Joshua, "Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelite men again, for a second time."
So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelite men at the hill called Gibeath-haaraloth.
This is why Joshua circumcised them: All the males who had come out of Egypt, all the soldiers, had died in the wilderness along the way after leaving Egypt.
Everyone who came out of Egypt had been circumcised, but none of the people born in the wilderness along the way after leaving Egypt had been circumcised.
The Israelites had walked in the wilderness for forty years until all the nation — all the men of war who had left Egypt — had died, because they had not obeyed Yahweh's voice. Yahweh had sworn to them that he would not let them see the land that he had promised their ancestors he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Joshua circumcised their children, whom he raised up in their place, because they were uncircumcised, as they had not been circumcised during their journey.
When they had finished circumcising all the nation, they stayed in their places in the camp until they had healed.
Yahweh said to Joshua, "Today I have removed the disgrace of Egypt from you." So that place is called Gilgal to this day.
The people of Israel camped at Gilgal and celebrated the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month on the plains of Jericho.
The day after the Passover, they ate unleavened bread and roasted grain from the produce of the land.
The manna stopped the day after they ate from the produce of the land. The Israelites no longer had manna; instead, that year they ate the fruit of the land of Canaan.
When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with his sword drawn. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you on our side or on the side of our enemies?"
He replied, "Neither, but I am here as the commander of Yahweh's army." Joshua fell to the ground on his face in worship and asked him, "What does my Lord want to tell his servant?"
The commander of Yahweh's army said to Joshua, "Take off your sandals, because the place where you are standing is holy." Joshua did so.
