Jonah

Chapter 2

Running from God and finding mercy.

1From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God.

2He said, "In my distress, I called to Yahweh, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave, I cried out, and you heard my voice.

3You threw me into the deep, into the heart of the seas. The flood surrounded me; all your waves and surging waters swept over me.

4I said, 'I have been driven away from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'

5The waters engulfed me, threatening my life. The deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6I sank to the foot of the mountains. The earth, with its bars, closed in on me forever. But You, Yahweh my God, brought my life up from the pit.

7When I was losing all hope, I remembered Yahweh, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.

8Those who worship worthless idols abandon the mercy that could be theirs.

9But I will sacrifice to you with songs of thanksgiving and fulfill the promises I have made. Salvation comes from Yahweh."

10Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
