Joel

Chapter 3

A call to return to God.

“Look, in those days and at that time, when I bring back the prosperity of Judah and Jerusalem,

I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will judge them for what they did to my people, to Israel, my own inheritance. They scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land.

They cast lots for my people, traded a boy for a prostitute, and sold a girl for wine to drink.

“What do you have against me, Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you trying to get back at me? If you are, I will quickly and swiftly pay you back for what you have done.

Because you have taken my silver and my gold and carried my finest treasures into your temples,

and you have sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, moving them far from their own land.

Watch, I will stir them up out of the place where you sold them, and I will pay you back for what you have done.

I will sell your sons and your daughters to the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the men of Sheba, to a distant nation, for Yahweh has spoken it.”

Announce this among the nations: “Prepare for war! Stir up the strong men. Let all the warriors come near. Let them advance.

Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’

Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves together.” Bring your mighty ones down there, Yahweh.

“Let the nations rouse themselves and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.”

Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ready. Come, trample the grapes, for the wine press is full; the vats overflow because their wickedness is great.

Crowds and crowds are in the valley of decision! For the day of Yahweh is near in the valley of decision.

The sun and moon will go dark, and the stars will stop shining.

Yahweh will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem. The heavens and the earth will shake, but Yahweh will be a safe place for his people, a strong refuge for the people of Israel.

Then you will know that I am Yahweh, your God, living in Zion, my holy mountain. Jerusalem will then be holy, and no foreigners will ever pass through it again.

On that day, wine will drip from the mountains, milk will flow from the hills, all the streams of Judah will run with water, and a spring will flow from Yahweh’s house to water the valley of Shittim.

Egypt will become a wasteland, and Edom will be a deserted wilderness, because of the violence done to the people of Judah, for they shed innocent blood in their land.

But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem for all generations.

I will pardon their bloodshed that I had not pardoned, for Yahweh lives in Zion.
