Again, on the day when the angels came to present themselves before Yahweh, Satan also came with them to present himself before Yahweh.
Yahweh asked Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered Yahweh, “From roaming throughout the earth, walking back and forth on it.”
Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you thought about my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth—a man of perfect character, who does what is right, who fears God, and avoids evil. He still maintains his integrity, even though you incited me to destroy him without cause.”
Satan answered Yahweh, “Skin for skin! A man will give everything he has to save his life.
But just reach out now and harm his bones and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.”
Yahweh said to Satan, “All right, he is in your hands. But you must spare his life.”
So Satan left Yahweh’s presence and struck Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
Job took a piece of broken pottery to scratch himself with, and he sat among the ashes.
Then his wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!"
But Job replied to her, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Should we only accept good things from God and not trouble?" Despite all this, Job did not sin with his words.
Now Job's three friends—Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, and Zophar from Naamah—heard about all the terrible things that had happened to him. They decided to meet and go together to show him sympathy and comfort him.
When they saw him from a distance, they barely recognized him. They began to weep loudly, tore their robes, and threw dust on their heads towards the sky.
Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how immense his suffering was.
