Hebrews

Chapter 2

Jesus, greater than everything before.

Therefore, we must pay more careful attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

For if the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,

how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

For God did not put the world to come, about which we are speaking, under the control of angels.

But someone has declared, "What are people, that you think of them? Or human beings, that you care for them?

You made them a little lower than the angels. You crowned them with glory and honor.

You put everything under their feet. The fact that God put everything under their feet means there is nothing left that is not under their control. But right now we don't see everything under their control yet.

But we do see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death. Through God's grace, he tasted death for everyone.

It was suitable for God, for whom and through whom everything exists, to bring many children to glory. To do this, he made the one who began their salvation perfect through suffering.

Because both the one who makes people holy and the people who are made holy all come from the same source. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.

He says, "I will tell my brothers about your name. I will sing your praise among the assembled people."

Again, he says, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Look, here I am with the children God has given me."

Since these children are human beings with physical bodies, Jesus also became human in the same way. He did this so that through death he could destroy the one who held the power of death, that is, the Devil,

and free all those who lived their whole lives in slavery because of their fear of death.

For it is clear that he doesn't help angels, but he helps the descendants of Abraham.

Therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could be a merciful and faithful high priest in his service to God. He did this to make atonement for the sins of the people.

Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
