Joseph leaned over his father's face, cried over him, and kissed him.
Joseph then ordered his servants, the doctors, to embalm his father. So the doctors embalmed Israel.
This process took 40 days, which is the usual time for embalming. The Egyptians mourned for him for 70 days.
When the days of mourning for his father were over, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's household, saying, "If you are pleased with me, please tell Pharaoh this:
'My father made me swear an oath, saying, "Look, I am dying. Bury me in the grave I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." So now, please let me go up and bury my father, and then I will return.'"
Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."
So Joseph went up to bury his father. All of Pharaoh's officials, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt went with him.
All of Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household also went with him. Only their little children, their flocks, and their herds remained in the land of Goshen.
Both chariots and horsemen went with him. It was a very large group.
They arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan River. There they mourned loudly and deeply. Joseph mourned for his father for seven days.
When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a very sad mourning by the Egyptians." So the place was named Abel Mizraim, which is across the Jordan.
His sons did exactly as he had commanded them.
His sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite, near Mamre, as a burial place.
Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and everyone else who had gone with him to bury his father, after he had buried him.
When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the evil we did to him?"
So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave a command before he died, saying,
'You are to tell Joseph: "Please forgive your brothers' wrongdoing and their sin, because they treated you badly." So now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of your father's God.'" Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
His brothers also went and bowed down before him, and they said, "Look, we are your servants."
Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God?
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done—the saving of many lives.
So now, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." He comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Joseph lived in Egypt, along with his father's family. Joseph lived to be 110 years old.
Joseph lived to see Ephraim's children and grandchildren. He also held the children of Machir, Manasseh's son, on his knees when they were born.
Joseph told his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely help you and lead you out of this land to the land he promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."
Joseph made the people of Israel promise, "God will surely help you, and when he does, you must carry my bones out of this place."
So Joseph died when he was 110 years old. They embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.
