Then Joseph went to Pharaoh and told him, “My father and my brothers, along with their flocks, herds, and everything they own, have left Canaan and are now in the region of Goshen.”
He selected five of his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh.
Pharaoh asked his brothers, “What is your occupation?” They answered Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, just as our ancestors were.”
They also said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live as temporary residents in this land, because there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks. The famine in Canaan is very severe. So please, allow your servants to settle in the land of Goshen.”
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.
The land of Egypt is available to you. Settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any capable men among them, put them in charge of my own livestock.”
Joseph brought his father Jacob and introduced him to Pharaoh. Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
Pharaoh asked Jacob, “How old are you?”
Jacob replied to Pharaoh, “My life as a pilgrim has been 130 years. My life has been short and difficult, not as long as the lives of my ancestors during their wanderings.”
Jacob blessed Pharaoh and then left his presence.
Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them land in Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the region of Rameses, just as Pharaoh had commanded.
Joseph provided food for his father, his brothers, and all of his father’s household, according to the needs of each family.
There was no food anywhere in the land, because the famine was so severe. Both Egypt and Canaan were suffering terribly from the famine.
Joseph collected all the money found in Egypt and Canaan in exchange for the grain they bought, and he brought the money to Pharaoh’s palace.
When all the money in Egypt and Canaan was spent, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food! Why should we die in your presence just because our money is gone?”
Joseph replied, “Give me your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.”
So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for their horses, flocks, herds, and donkeys. He fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year.
When that year ended, they came to him the next year and said, “We cannot hide from you, sir, that our money is all spent, and our herds of livestock now belong to you. There is nothing left for you but our bodies and our land.
Why should we and our land perish before your eyes? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we and our land will become Pharaoh’s servants. Give us seeds so we can live and not die, and so the land won’t become desolate.”
So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. All the Egyptians sold their fields because the famine was so severe, and the land became Pharaoh’s property.
As for the people, he moved them into the cities from one end of Egypt to the other.
He did not buy the land belonging to the priests, because the priests received a regular payment from Pharaoh. They ate the portion Pharaoh gave them, which is why they didn't sell their land.
Then Joseph said to the people, “Today, I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you will plant the land.
When harvest comes, you must give one-fifth of your crops to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths will be yours to use for seed, for your food, for your households, and for food for your children.”
They said, “You have saved our lives! We are grateful to you, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
To this day, Joseph established a rule throughout the land of Egypt that Pharaoh should receive one-fifth of the harvest. Only the land of the priests did not become Pharaoh's.
The Israelites lived in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired possessions there, had many children, and grew into a very large population.
Jacob lived in Egypt for seventeen years. So Jacob lived a total of 147 years.
When the time for Israel to die was near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If you are pleased with me, please put your hand under my thigh and promise to be loyal and truthful to me. Please do not bury me in Egypt.
Instead, when I die, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in the burial place of my ancestors.” Joseph said, “I will do as you have asked.”
Israel said, “Swear to me.” And Joseph swore to him. Then Israel bowed in worship at the head of his bed.
