Genesis

Chapter 4

The beginning of everything.

The man had sexual relations with his wife Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With Yahweh's help, I have had a baby boy."

Later, she gave birth again, this time to Cain's brother, Abel. Abel became a shepherd, while Cain was a farmer.

After some time, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the crops he grew.

Abel also brought an offering, choosing some of the firstborn lambs from his flock and the best parts of them. Yahweh was pleased with Abel and his offering,

but he was not pleased with Cain and his offering. Cain became very angry, and his face showed his displeasure.

Yahweh said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why do you look so upset?

If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you don't do what is right, sin is waiting at your door, eager to control you. You must master it."

Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Yahweh said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" Cain answered, "I don't know. Am I supposed to be my brother's guardian?"

Yahweh said, "What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground, like a voice.

Now you are cursed by the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood that you shed.

From now on, when you farm the ground, it will no longer produce good crops for you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth."

Cain said to Yahweh, "My punishment is too great for me to bear.

Look, today you have banished me from this land. I will be hidden from your presence, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth. Anyone who finds me will kill me."

Yahweh said to him, "No, if anyone kills Cain, that person will suffer seven times as much punishment." Then Yahweh put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

Cain then left Yahweh's presence and lived in the land of Nod, which is east of Eden.

Cain had sexual relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and named it Enoch, after his son.

Irad was born to Enoch. Irad was the father of Mehujael. Mehujael was the father of Methushael. Methushael was the father of Lamech.

Lamech married two women: the first was named Adah, and the second was named Zillah.

Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the ancestor of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

His brother’s name was Jubal, who was the ancestor of all who play the harp and flute.

Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, who forged all kinds of cutting tools from bronze and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.

Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice. You wives of Lamech, pay attention to what I say. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.

If Cain will be avenged seven times, then Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times.”

Adam had sexual relations with his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “God has given me another child to replace Abel, because Cain killed him.”

A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time, people began to worship Yahweh publicly.
