Dinah, the daughter Leah bore to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, who was the ruler of that region, saw her. He took her, had sex with her, and disgraced her.
He was deeply attracted to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.
Shechem said to his father, Hamor, "Get me this young woman to be my wife."
Jacob heard that Shechem had dishonored his daughter Dinah. But since his sons were with his livestock in the field, Jacob said nothing until they returned.
Hamor, Shechem's father, came out to talk with Jacob.
When Jacob’s sons heard what happened, they came in from the field. They were deeply hurt and very angry, because Shechem had done something disgraceful in Israel by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter, which should never be done.
Hamor spoke with them, saying, "My son Shechem is deeply in love with your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife."
Let's arrange marriages between our people. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
You can live among us, and the land is open to you. Live here, trade in it, and acquire property in it."
Shechem also said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Please favor me, and I will give whatever you ask.
Ask for a large dowry and many gifts, and I will give whatever you request, if only you will give me the young woman as my wife."
Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with a trick, because Shechem had dishonored their sister Dinah.
They said to them, "We cannot do this; we cannot give our sister to an uncircumcised man, because that would be a disgrace to us.
We will agree to only one condition: if you become like us, and every male among you is circumcised,
then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves. We will live with you and become one people.
But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our sister and leave."
Their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.
The young man didn't delay in doing this, because he was very fond of Jacob's daughter, and he was the most respected person in his father's household.
Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke with the men of their city, saying,
“These men are at peace with us. So let them live in our land and trade here. Look, the land is large enough for them. Let’s take their daughters as wives for ourselves and give them our daughters.
However, the men will only agree to live with us and become one people if every male among us is circumcised, just as they are.
If we agree, won’t their livestock, their possessions, and all their animals become ours? Let us just agree to their terms, and they will live among us.”
Everyone who came out of the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem. So every male was circumcised, everyone who came out of the city gate.
On the third day, while they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword, attacked the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.
They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords. Then they took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left.
Jacob’s sons then came upon the dead bodies and looted the city because its people had shamed their sister.
They took their flocks, herds, donkeys, and everything in the city and in the fields.
They took all their wealth. They captured all their little children and wives, and plundered everything in their houses.
Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have caused me trouble and made me hated by the people of this land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have few people. They will gather together against me, attack me, and destroy me and my entire family.”
They replied, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”
