Genesis

Chapter 28

The beginning of everything.

Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman.

Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father. Get a wife from there, from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

May God Almighty bless you, make you fruitful, and multiply your descendants so that you become a multitude of peoples.

And may he give you the blessing of Abraham, for you and for your descendants with you, so that you may inherit the land where you are staying, the land God gave to Abraham."

So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, Rebekah’s brother, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan Aram to get a wife there, and that when he blessed him, Isaac had commanded him, "You must not marry a Canaanite woman."

and that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother and went to Paddan Aram.

Esau saw that Isaac, his father, was not pleased with the women of Canaan.

So Esau went to Ishmael and, in addition to the wives he already had, he married Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, and the sister of Nebaioth.

Jacob left Beersheba and headed toward Haran.

He arrived at a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set. He took one of the stones from that place, put it under his head, and lay down to sleep.

He had a dream. In his dream, he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven. He saw the angels of God going up and down on it.

Then he saw Yahweh standing above it, who said, “I am Yahweh, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.

Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, east, north, and south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants.

I am with you and will protect you everywhere you go. I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done everything I promised you.”

Jacob woke up from his sleep and said, “Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn’t realize it.”

He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is nothing less than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Jacob got up early in the morning, took the stone he had used for a pillow, set it upright as a monument, and poured oil on top of it.

He named that place Bethel, though the city was originally called Luz.

Jacob made a promise, saying, “If God will be with me, protect me on this journey, and give me food to eat and clothes to wear,

so that I return safely to my father’s house, then Yahweh will be my God.

And this stone, which I have set up as a monument, will be God’s house. I will faithfully give you a tenth of everything you give me.”
