Abraham took another wife named Keturah.
She had sons: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.
Midian's sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. These were all children of Keturah.
Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac,
but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts. While he was still alive, he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward, into the eastern country.
Abraham lived for one hundred seventy-five years.
Abraham died at a good old age, an old man who had lived a full life, and was reunited with his people.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, son of Zohar the Hittite, which is near Mamre.
This was the field Abraham had bought from the sons of Heth. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah.
After Abraham died, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac lived near Beer Lahai Roi.
This is the family history of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whose mother was Hagar, the Egyptian servant of Sarah.
These are the names of Ishmael’s sons, listed in the order they were born: Ishmael’s firstborn was Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
These were Ishmael’s sons, and these are their names grouped by their villages and camps: twelve tribal leaders, each with his own people.
Ishmael lived one hundred thirty-seven years. He died and was reunited with his people.
His descendants lived in the area from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt, in the direction of Assyria. He lived separately from all his relatives.
This is the family history of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
Isaac prayed to Yahweh for his wife because she couldn't have children. Yahweh answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
The children struggled inside her. She said, "If this is how it's going to be, why am I even alive?" So she went to ask Yahweh for guidance.
Yahweh told her, "Two nations are in your womb. Two peoples will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older one will serve the younger one."
When it was time for her to give birth, she found that she was indeed having twins.
The first baby came out red all over, like a hairy coat. They named him Esau.
After that, his brother came out, holding onto Esau's heel. He was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
The boys grew up. Esau became a skilled hunter, a man who loved the outdoors. Jacob was a quiet man, who preferred living in tents.
Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed eating the wild game Esau brought him, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
One day, Jacob was cooking stew. Esau came in from the fields, starving.
Esau said to Jacob, "Please, let me have some of that red stew; I'm completely famished!" This is why he was also called Edom.
Jacob replied, "First, sell me your rights as the firstborn son."
Esau said, "Look, I'm about to die of hunger. What good is a birthright to me?"
Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So Esau swore to him, and in doing so, he sold his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. Esau ate, drank, got up, and left. This showed how little Esau valued his birthright.
