Genesis

Chapter 16

The beginning of everything.

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not had any children. She had an Egyptian servant named Hagar.

Sarai said to Abram, “Look, Yahweh has kept me from having children. Please sleep with my servant. Maybe I can have children through her.” Abram listened to what Sarai said.

So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took her Egyptian servant Hagar and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. This happened after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan.

He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When Hagar realized she was pregnant, she began to look down on her mistress Sarai.

Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault! I put my servant in your arms, and now that she sees she’s pregnant, she looks down on me. May Yahweh judge between you and me.”

But Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your servant is yours to command. Do to her whatever you think is right.” So Sarai treated Hagar harshly, and Hagar ran away from her.

The angel of Yahweh found Hagar by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the road to Shur.

He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She replied, “I’m running away from my mistress Sarai.”

The angel of Yahweh said to her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority.”

The angel of Yahweh also said to her, “I will greatly increase your descendants so that they will be too many to count.”

The angel of Yahweh said to her, “Look, you are pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your suffering.

He will be like a wild donkey among people. He will fight against everyone, and everyone will fight against him. He will live in opposition to all his relatives.”

She called the name of Yahweh, who had spoken to her, “You are God who sees me,” for she said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me and remained alive?”

That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered.

Hagar gave birth to a son for Abram. Abram named the son Hagar gave birth to, Ishmael.

Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael for him.
