Genesis

Chapter 14

The beginning of everything.

In the time of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim,

these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (also called Zoar).

All these kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (also known as the Salt Sea).

They had served Chedorlaomer for twelve years, but in the thirteenth year, they rebelled.

In the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer came with the kings who were with him. They attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim.

They also attacked the Horites in their Mount Seir, all the way to El Paran, which is near the wilderness.

Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (also called Kadesh). They attacked all the country of the Amalekites and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazon Tamar.

The king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (also called Zoar) went out. They lined up for battle against them in the Valley of Siddim.

They fought against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar. Four kings against these five.

Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and some fell into the pits, while those who remained fled to the hills.

The invaders took all the possessions and all the food from Sodom and Gomorrah and left.

They also took Lot, Abram’s nephew, who lived in Sodom, and his possessions, and then they left.

A man who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew. At that time, Abram was living by the oak trees of Mamre the Amorite, who was a brother of Eshcol and Aner; these men were allies of Abram.

When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he gathered his 318 trained men, who had been born in his household, and pursued the invaders all the way to Dan.

He and his servants attacked them by night, defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.

Abram brought back all the possessions. He also brought back his relative, Lot, and his possessions, as well as the women and the other people.

After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was a priest of God Most High.

He blessed Abram and said, “May Abram be blessed by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.

And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but you can keep the possessions for yourself.”

Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand in an oath to Yahweh, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

that I will not take even a thread or a sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so that you cannot say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’

I will not accept anything from you, except for what the young men have eaten, and the share for the men who came with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their share.”
