Ezekiel

Chapter 16

Wild visions of God's glory.

Again, the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

“Son of man, make Jerusalem aware of her disgusting sins;

and tell her, ‘This is what the Lord Yahweh says to Jerusalem: “Your origin and birth are from the land of Canaan. Your father was an Amorite and your mother was a Hittite.

When you were born, your umbilical cord was not cut. You were not washed with water to clean you. You were not rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths.

No one felt sorry enough for you to do any of these things, or to have compassion on you. Instead, you were thrown out into an open field, because you were despised on the day you were born.

“‘“When I passed by and saw you lying in your own blood, I told you, ‘Live, even though you are in your blood!’ Yes, I told you, ‘Live, even though you are in your blood!’

I made you grow like a plant in the field. You grew up, became tall and beautiful. Your breasts developed, and your hair grew, but you were still naked and bare.

“‘“Then I passed by you again and saw you. It was the right time for love. I spread my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I made a promise to you and entered into a covenant with you,” says the Lord Yahweh, “and you became mine.

“‘“Then I washed you with water. I thoroughly washed away your blood and anointed you with oil.

I clothed you in embroidered garments, put sandals of fine leather on your feet, dressed you in fine linen, and covered you with silk.

I adorned you with jewelry, put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain around your neck.

I put a ring in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.

So you were decorated with gold and silver. Your clothing was fine linen, silk, and embroidered fabric. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil. You became extremely beautiful and rose to a royal position.

Your fame spread among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect due to the splendor I had given you,” says the Lord Yahweh.

“‘“But you became confident in your beauty and acted like a prostitute because of your fame. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by. It was theirs.

You took some of your clothes and made colorful shrines for yourselves, and you acted like a prostitute on them. This should not have happened, nor should it ever happen.

You also took your beautiful jewels, made from my gold and silver that I had given you, and made male idols for yourselves, and you acted like a prostitute with them.

You took your embroidered garments, covered these idols with them, and set my oil and my incense before them.

The food I gave you—fine flour, oil, and honey—with which I nourished you, you even set before them as a pleasing aroma; and so it was,” says the Lord Yahweh.

“‘“Furthermore, you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and sacrificed them to these idols to be devoured. Was your prostitution such a small matter,

that you slaughtered my children and offered them up by making them pass through fire for the idols?

In all your detestable acts and your prostitution, you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, and lying in your own blood.

“‘“All this has happened after all your wickedness. How terrible for you, how terrible!” says the Lord Yahweh,

“that you built yourself a vaulted chamber and made yourself a high place in every street.

You built your high place at the head of every road. You made your beauty disgusting, spread your legs to everyone who passed by, and increased your prostitution.

You also committed sexual immorality with the Egyptians, your neighbors known for their great passion; and you increased your prostitution to provoke my anger.

Therefore, look, I have stretched out my hand against you, I have reduced your portion, and I have given you over to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your indecent behavior.

You also acted like a prostitute with the Assyrians because you were never satisfied; yes, you acted like a prostitute with them, and still you were not satisfied.

You went on to increase your prostitution to the land of merchants, to Chaldea, yet you were still not satisfied.

“‘“How weak you are,” says the Lord Yahweh, “since you do all these things, acting like a brazen prostitute.

You build your places for sex at the head of every road and make your high places on every street. But you are not like a typical prostitute, because you don't take payment for sex.

“‘“An adulterous wife! Someone who welcomes strangers instead of her husband!

People usually give gifts to all prostitutes, but you give your gifts to all your lovers, and you bribe them to come to you from every side for your prostitution.

You are different from other women in your prostitution, because no one has to pursue you to behave like a prostitute. You pay others, and no one pays you; therefore, you are different.”’

“Therefore, prostitute, hear Yahweh’s word:

'This is what the Lord Yahweh says: “Because you poured out your filthiness and exposed your nakedness through your prostitution with your lovers, and because of all your disgusting idols and the blood of your children that you gave to them,

therefore, listen, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you had pleasure, and all those you loved, along with all those you hated. I will gather them all around you, and I will expose you to them, so they can see all your nakedness.

I will judge you as women who break their marriage vows and shed blood are judged, and I will bring on you the blood of my furious jealousy.”

I will also hand you over to them, and they will tear down your shrines and demolish your high places. They will strip you of your clothes and take your beautiful jewelry. They will leave you naked and bare.

They will also bring a crowd against you and stone you with rocks and stab you with their swords.

They will burn your houses with fire and carry out judgments against you in front of many women. I will stop you from acting like a prostitute, and you will no longer give payments.

Then I will let my anger against you subside, and my jealousy will leave you. I will be calm and no longer angry.

“‘“Because you have forgotten your youth and have angered me with all these actions, I will also bring your actions down on your own head,” says the Lord Yahweh. “You will not commit this shameless sin along with all your detestable practices.

“‘“Look, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’

You are the daughter of your mother, who hated her husband and her children. You are the sister of your sisters, who hated their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite.

Your older sister is Samaria, who lives to your left, she and her daughters. Your younger sister, who lives to your right, is Sodom and her daughters.

Yet you did not follow their ways or commit their detestable acts. But soon you became more corrupt than they in all your ways.

As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “Sodom your sister, nor her daughters, did not do as you have done, you and your daughters.

“‘“Look, this was the sin of your sister Sodom: pride, plenty of food, and carefree ease were enjoyed by her and her daughters; but she did not help the poor and needy.

They were arrogant and committed detestable acts before me. Therefore I removed them when I saw it.

Samaria has not committed even half of your sins. You have multiplied your detestable acts more than they have, and you have made your sisters seem innocent by comparison with all the detestable acts you have done.

So you too must bear your own shame, since you have made your sisters seem innocent. Through your sins, which are more detestable than theirs, they are more righteous than you. Yes, be ashamed and bear your shame, because you have made your sisters seem innocent.

“‘“I will restore their fortunes: the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters. And I will restore your fortunes among them;

so that you will have to bear your own shame and be ashamed of everything you have done, since you have been a comfort to them.

Your sisters, Sodom and her villages, will be restored to their former condition; Samaria and her villages will be restored to their former condition; and you and your villages will be restored to your former condition.

You never even mentioned your sister Sodom during your time of pride,

before your wickedness was exposed. This happened when the daughters of Syria and all her neighbors, and the daughters of the Philistines, who despised you all around, shamed you.

You have endured your immoral behavior and your detestable acts,” says Yahweh.

“‘For this is what the Lord Yahweh says: “I will also deal with you as you have done, because you despised the oath by breaking the covenant.

Nevertheless, I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.

Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your older and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, though not through your covenant.

I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am Yahweh;

so that you may remember, be ashamed, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I forgive you for everything you have done,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”
