Ezekiel

Chapter 13

Wild visions of God's glory.

The word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

"Son of man, speak against the prophets of Israel who are prophesying. Tell those who prophesy from their own thoughts, ‘Hear the word of Yahweh:

This is what the Lord Yahweh says: How terrible it will be for the foolish prophets who follow their own ideas and have seen nothing!

Israel, your prophets have been like jackals in the ruins.

You, the prophets, have not gone up to mend the breaches, nor have you built a wall for the people of Israel to stand strong in battle on the day of Yahweh.

They have seen false visions and made lying predictions. They claim, ‘Yahweh says,’ when Yahweh has not sent them, yet they made people hope their words would come true.

Haven’t you seen a false vision and spoken a lying prediction when you say, ‘Yahweh says,’ even though I have not spoken?”

“Therefore, this is what the Lord Yahweh says: Because you have spoken falsehoods and seen lies, I am against you,” says the Lord Yahweh.

“My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and make lying predictions. They will not be part of my people’s assembly, nor will their names be recorded in the register of the people of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.”

“‘Because they have misled my people by saying, “Peace,” when there is no peace, it’s as if someone builds a flimsy wall, and they cover it with whitewash.

Tell those who coat it with whitewash that it will fall. A torrential rain will come, and large hailstones will fall, and a stormy wind will tear it down.

When the wall falls, won't people ask you, “Where is the plaster you used to cover it?”

Therefore, the Lord Yahweh says: “In my fury, I will tear it apart with a powerful wind. My anger will bring a drenching downpour, and huge hailstones in my wrath will destroy it.

I will tear down the wall you plastered with whitewash and bring it to the ground, exposing its foundation. It will fall, and you will be destroyed in its collapse. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.”

“This is how I will fully unleash my anger on the wall and on those who plastered it with whitewash. I will tell you, ‘The wall is gone, and so are those who plastered it—’

namely, the prophets of Israel who prophesy about Jerusalem and see visions of peace for her, when there is no peace,” says the Lord Yahweh.”

“Son of Man, confront the women among your people who prophesy out of their own ideas; prophesy against them,”

and say, “This is what the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Trouble is coming to the women who sew magic charms for everyone’s wrists and make special veils for people of all ages, all to trap souls! Will you hunt the souls of my people while keeping yourselves alive?

You have shamed me among my people for a few handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. You kill people who should not die and keep others alive who should not live, all by lying to my people who are eager to believe your lies.’

Therefore, the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Listen, I am against your magic charms you use to hunt souls and make them fly away. I will tear them from your arms and set free the souls you hunt and try to make fly away.

I will also tear your special veils and rescue my people from your power; they will no longer be prey in your hands. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.

Because with your lies you have made the hearts of the righteous sad, though I brought them no sorrow, and you have encouraged the wicked not to turn from their evil ways so they would be saved.

Therefore, you will no longer see false visions or practice fortune-telling. I will rescue my people from your power. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’”
