Exodus

Chapter 8

God rescues His people from slavery.

Yahweh spoke to Moses: "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'This is what Yahweh says: Let my people go, so they can worship me.'

If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs everywhere in your country.

The river will be full of frogs. They will come up and enter your house, your bedroom, and even your bed. They will be in the houses of your officials, on your people, in your ovens, and in your kneading bowls.

The frogs will cover you, your people, and all your officials.

Yahweh said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, streams, and ponds, and make frogs come up onto the land of Egypt.'"

Aaron stretched his hand over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.

The magicians did the same thing with their magic, bringing up frogs onto the land of Egypt.

Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, "Please ask Yahweh to take away the frogs from me and my people, and I will let the people go to offer sacrifices to Yahweh."

Moses said to Pharaoh, "You name the time when I should pray for you, your officials, and your people, so that the frogs will be removed from you and your houses and remain only in the river."

Pharaoh answered, “Tomorrow.” Moses then said, “It will be as you say, so you will know there is no one like Yahweh our God.”

“The frogs will leave you, your houses, your servants, and your people. They will remain only in the river.”

Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, and Moses cried out to Yahweh about the frogs he had brought upon Pharaoh.

Yahweh did as Moses requested, and the frogs died in the houses, courtyards, and fields.

People gathered them into piles, and the land stank.

But when Pharaoh saw that the problem was over, he became stubborn and would not listen to them, just as Yahweh had said.

Yahweh told Moses, “Tell Aaron to stretch out his staff and strike the dust on the ground. It will turn into gnats all over Egypt.”

They did as they were told. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust on the ground, and gnats appeared on people and animals. All the dust on the ground in Egypt turned into gnats.

The magicians tried to use their magic to produce gnats, but they couldn't. Gnats were on people and animals.

Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is God’s doing!” But Pharaoh remained stubborn and wouldn't listen to them, just as Yahweh had said.

Yahweh told Moses, “Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he goes out to the water. Tell him that Yahweh says, ‘Let my people go so they can worship me.

If you refuse to let my people go, then I will send swarms of flies on you, your officials, your people, and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies, and even the ground they stand on will be covered with them.

However, on that day I will make an exception for the land of Goshen, where my people live. No swarms of flies will be there. This is so you will know that I, Yahweh, am present in this land.

I will make a clear distinction between my people and your people. This sign will happen tomorrow.’”

Yahweh did as he said. Huge swarms of flies invaded Pharaoh’s palace and the homes of his officials. All over Egypt, the land was ruined by these swarms of flies.

Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God right here in this land!”

Moses replied, “That wouldn’t be right. What we sacrifice to Yahweh our God is detestable to the Egyptians. If we offer sacrifices that the Egyptians consider detestable right in front of them, won't they stone us?

We must travel three days into the wilderness to sacrifice to Yahweh our God, as he commands us.”

Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to sacrifice to Yahweh your God in the wilderness, but don’t go too far. And pray for me.”

Moses said, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to Yahweh that the swarms of flies leave Pharaoh, his officials, and his people tomorrow. But don’t let Pharaoh deceive us again by refusing to let the people go to sacrifice to Yahweh.”

Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to Yahweh.

Yahweh did what Moses asked. He removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people. Not a single fly was left.

Pharaoh, however, became stubborn again and still would not let the people go.
