Exodus

Chapter 20

God rescues His people from slavery.

God spoke all these words:

"I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of Egypt, where you were slaves.

"You must not have any other gods besides me.

"You must not make for yourselves an idol, or any likeness of anything in heaven above, or on the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth.

You must not bow down to them or worship them, because I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God. I will punish the children for the sin of their fathers, to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.

But I will show faithful love to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commands.

"You must not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, because Yahweh will not consider anyone innocent who misuses his name.

"Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy.

You are to work and do all your tasks for six days,

But the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You must not do any work on it—not you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or any foreigner living within your city gates.

For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Respect your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land Yahweh your God is giving you.

Do not murder.

Do not commit adultery.

"You must not steal."

"You must not lie about your neighbor."

"You must not strongly desire your neighbor’s house. You must not strongly desire your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor."

All the people heard the thunder, saw the lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the smoking mountain. When the people saw these things, they trembled and stayed far away.

They said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will listen; but don’t let God speak with us, or we will die.”

Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will respect him and not sin.”

The people stayed far away, but Moses went closer to the thick darkness where God was.

Yahweh said to Moses, “Tell the people of Israel this: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have spoken with you from heaven.

You must not make silver gods or gold gods for yourselves to worship alongside me.

You must make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice your burnt offerings and your peace offerings on it, using your sheep and cattle. In every place where I choose to make my name known, I will come to you and bless you.

If you build me an altar of stone, you must not build it with cut stones; for if you use a tool on it, you make it unacceptable.

You must not go up steps to my altar, so that your bareness will not be seen on it.’
