Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to Yahweh, saying, “I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea.
Yah is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him; he is the God of my father, and I will honor him greatly.
Yahweh is a warrior; Yahweh is his name.
He has thrown Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea. His best commanders have drowned in the Red Sea.
The deep waters cover them; they sank to the bottom like a stone.
Your right hand, Yahweh, is glorious in power. Your right hand, Yahweh, shatters the enemy.
In your great majesty, you overthrow those who stand against you. You unleash your anger, and it burns them up like straw.
With a blast from your nostrils, the waters piled up. The floods stood upright like a wall. The deep waters froze in the heart of the sea.
The enemy said, ‘I will chase them. I will catch them. I will divide the stolen goods. I will have my fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them.’
You blew with your wind, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
Who among the gods is like you, Yahweh? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in praise, a doer of wonders?
You stretched out your right hand, and the earth swallowed them.
“In your unfailing love, you have led the people you rescued. You have guided them with your strength to your holy home.
The people have heard and they tremble. The people of Philistia are seized with pain.
Then the leaders of Edom were terrified. Trembling grips the strong men of Moab. All the people of Canaan have lost their courage.
Terror and dread fall on them. Because of your great power, they are as still as a stone—until your people pass through, Yahweh, until the people you have bought pass through.
You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance—the place, Yahweh, that you made for yourself to live; the sanctuary, Lord, that your hands have built.
Yahweh will reign forever and ever.”
Because Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen went into the sea, Yahweh brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the middle of the sea.
Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her with tambourines and dancing.
Miriam sang to them, “Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea.”
Moses led Israel away from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They traveled for three days in the wilderness and found no water.
When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water because it was bitter. That is why the place was named Marah (which means ‘bitter’).
The people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What will we drink?”
Then Moses cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh showed him a tree. Moses threw the tree into the water, and the water became sweet. There, Yahweh made laws and rules for them, and there he tested them.
He said, “If you listen carefully to Yahweh your God and do what he considers right, if you obey his commands and follow all his rules, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians. For I am Yahweh, your healer.”
Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees. They camped there by the water.
