Deuteronomy

Chapter 8

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

You must carefully obey all the commands I am giving you today so that you may live, multiply, and go in and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors.

Remember the entire journey Yahweh your God has led you on these forty years in the wilderness. He did this to humble you and test you to see what was in your heart, and whether you would obey his commands or not.

He humbled you, allowed you to be hungry, and fed you with manna, which you and your ancestors had never known. He did this to teach you that people don't live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from Yahweh's mouth.

For these forty years, your clothes didn't wear out, and your feet didn't swell.

Understand in your heart that Yahweh your God disciplines you just as a parent disciplines a child.

You must obey the commands of Yahweh your God, live according to his ways, and respect him.

Because Yahweh your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with streams, springs, and underground water flowing into valleys and hills.

It's a land of wheat and barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive trees and honey.

It's a land where you will eat plenty of food and lack nothing. It's a land where the stones are iron, and you can dig copper from its hills.

When you eat and are full, you must praise Yahweh your God for the good land he has given you.

Be careful not to forget Yahweh your God by failing to keep his commands, rules, and laws that I am giving you today.

Otherwise, when you have eaten and are full, and have built nice houses and live in them,

and when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold increase, and everything you own grows,

then you might become proud and forget Yahweh your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of that place of slavery.

He led you through the vast and terrifying wilderness, with its venomous snakes and scorpions, and through thirsty ground where there was no water. He made water flow for you from a flint rock.

He fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your ancestors had never known. He did this to humble you and test you, so that in the end he could do you good.

Don't ever say to yourselves, "My own strength and power have gotten me this wealth."

Instead, remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to gain wealth. He does this to confirm his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

If you ever forget Yahweh your God, and follow other gods, serving and worshiping them, I warn you today that you will certainly be destroyed.

You will be destroyed just like the nations Yahweh makes perish before you, because you didn't listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.
