Deuteronomy

Chapter 3

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan. Og, the king of Bashan, and all his people came out to fight us at Edrei.

Yahweh said to me, "Don’t be afraid of him, because I have handed him, all his people, and his land over to you. You are to do to him what you did to Sihon, the Amorite king who lived in Heshbon."

So Yahweh our God also handed Og, the king of Bashan, and all his people over to us. We defeated him until no one was left alive.

At that time, we captured all his cities. We took every single one of the sixty cities, the entire region of Argob, which was Og’s kingdom in Bashan.

All these cities were strongly fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, in addition to many unwalled villages.

We completely destroyed them, just as we did to Sihon, king of Heshbon, by utterly destroying every inhabited city, along with the women and children.

But we kept all the livestock and the valuables from the cities for ourselves.

At that time, we took control of the land from the two Amorite kings who were east of the Jordan River, from the Arnon Valley all the way to Mount Hermon.

(The Sidonians call Hermon "Sirion," and the Amorites call it "Senir.")

We captured all the cities on the plains, and all of Gilead, and all of Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, which were cities in Og’s kingdom in Bashan.

(Og, king of Bashan, was the only one left from the remnant of the Rephaim. Indeed, his bed was made of iron. It is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites. It was nine cubits long and four cubits wide, using a standard cubit measurement.)

At that time, we took possession of this land. From Aroer, which is by the Arnon Valley, and half of the hill country of Gilead, and its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites.

And the rest of Gilead, and all of Bashan, Og’s kingdom, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh; that is, the entire region of Argob, all of Bashan. (This is also called the land of the Rephaim.

Jair, the son of Manasseh, took all the region of Argob, up to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and named Bashan after himself, calling it Havvoth Jair, which it is still called today.)

I gave Gilead to Machir.

To the people of Reuben and Gad, I gave the land from Gilead to the Arnon Valley, including the middle of the valley and its border, extending to the Jabbok River, which is the border of the Ammonites.

This also included the Arabah, and the Jordan River and its border, from Lake Kinneret all the way to the Dead Sea, below the eastern slopes of Pisgah.

At that time, I commanded you, 'Yahweh your God has given you this land to take possession of it. All your brave men must cross over armed ahead of your relatives, the people of Israel.'

But your wives, children, and livestock (I know you have a lot of livestock) will stay in the towns I have given you,

until Yahweh gives your relatives rest, just as he has given you rest, and they also take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to the land I have given you.

At that time, I also commanded Joshua, 'You have seen with your own eyes everything Yahweh your God has done to these two kings. Yahweh will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are going.'

Do not be afraid of them, because Yahweh your God himself is fighting for you.

At that time, I pleaded with Yahweh,

"Lord Yahweh, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty power. What god in heaven or on earth can do deeds and powerful acts like yours?

Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, that beautiful mountain region, and Lebanon."

But Yahweh was angry with me because of you, and he would not listen to me. Yahweh said to me, "That's enough! Don't speak to me about this matter again."

Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west, north, south, and east. Look with your own eyes, because you will not cross this Jordan River.

But appoint Joshua, encourage him, and strengthen him, because he will lead these people across and will make them inherit the land that you will see.

So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.
