The priests, the Levites, the entire tribe of Levi, will not have any portion or inheritance along with Israel. They will eat the offerings made to Yahweh by fire, and his portion.
They will have no inheritance among their relatives. Yahweh is their inheritance, just as he promised them.
This is what the priests are entitled to from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep: they must give the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the inner organs.
You must also give him the first fruits of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the first wool from your sheep.
Because Yahweh your God has chosen him from all your tribes to stand and serve in Yahweh's name, him and his sons forever.
If a Levite comes from any of your towns in Israel, where he lives as a foreigner, and comes with all his heart to the place Yahweh chooses;
then he must serve in the name of Yahweh his God, just like all his fellow Levites who stand there before Yahweh.
They will all receive the same share of food, in addition to what he gets from selling his family's possessions.
When you enter the land Yahweh your God is giving you, you must not learn to imitate the detestable practices of those nations.
You must not allow anyone among you to sacrifice their son or daughter in the fire, or practice divination, sorcery, incantation, or witchcraft.
You must not allow anyone to cast spells, consult with spirits, be a medium, or call up the dead.
For whoever does these things is detestable to Yahweh. It is because of these detestable practices that Yahweh your God is driving those nations out ahead of you.
You must be completely faithful to Yahweh your God.
Even though the nations you are about to take over listen to those who practice sorcery and divination, Yahweh your God has not allowed you to do such things.
Yahweh your God will raise up a prophet for you from among your own people, from your own relatives, just like me. You must listen to him.
This is exactly what you asked Yahweh your God for at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, 'May I never hear the voice of Yahweh my God again, nor see this great fire anymore, so that I don't die.'
Yahweh said to me, 'They have spoken well.'
I will raise up a prophet for them from among their relatives, like you. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.
If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will hold them accountable.
But if a prophet dares to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die.
You may say to yourselves, 'How can we know if a message was not spoken by Yahweh?'
If a prophet speaks in Yahweh's name and the message does not happen or come true, then Yahweh has not spoken that message. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You must not be afraid of him.
