Deuteronomy

Chapter 16

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover to Yahweh your God, because in the month of Abib, Yahweh your God brought you out of Egypt by night.

You must sacrifice the Passover offering to Yahweh your God from your flocks and herds, in the place Yahweh chooses for his name to live.

You must not eat any bread made with yeast with it. For seven days you must eat unleavened bread with it, which is the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in a hurry. Do this so you remember the day you left Egypt all the days of your life.

No yeast should be found in your possession throughout your land for seven days. Also, none of the meat you sacrifice on the evening of the first day should be left out overnight until morning.

You may not sacrifice the Passover within any of the towns Yahweh your God gives you.

Instead, you must sacrifice the Passover at the place Yahweh your God chooses for his name to live. You must do this in the evening, at sunset, at the same time of year you left Egypt.

You must roast and eat it in the place Yahweh your God chooses. In the morning, you may return to your tents.

For six days you must eat unleavened bread. On the seventh day, there will be a sacred assembly for Yahweh your God, and you must not do any work.

You must count seven weeks for yourselves. Begin counting seven weeks from the time you start harvesting the grain.

Then you must celebrate the Festival of Weeks to Yahweh your God with a freewill offering that you give by hand, according to how Yahweh your God has blessed you.

You must rejoice before Yahweh your God, along with your sons, your daughters, your male servants, your female servants, the Levites who live in your towns, and the foreigners, orphans, and widows who are among you, in the place Yahweh your God chooses for his name to live.

Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. Therefore, you must follow and carry out these laws.

After you have harvested your grain from the threshing floor and your wine from the wine press, you must celebrate the Festival of Shelters for seven days.

You must be joyful during your festival—you, your sons, your daughters, your male servants, your female servants, the Levites, the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows who live in your towns.

You must celebrate a festival to Yahweh your God for seven days in the place Yahweh chooses, because Yahweh your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and you will be completely joyful.

Three times a year, all your men must appear before Yahweh your God in the place he chooses: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks, and the Festival of Shelters. They must not appear before Yahweh empty-handed.

Each man must give as he is able, according to the blessing Yahweh your God has given you.

You must appoint judges and officials for yourselves in all your towns that Yahweh your God gives you, according to your tribes, and they must judge the people fairly.

You must not twist justice, show favoritism, or accept bribes, because a bribe blinds the wise and corrupts the words of the righteous.

You must always pursue what is just so that you may live and take possession of the land Yahweh your God is giving you.

You must not plant any kind of tree as an Asherah pole beside the altar of Yahweh your God that you make for yourselves.

You must also not set up any sacred stone, which Yahweh your God hates.
