Deuteronomy

Chapter 14

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

You are children of Yahweh your God. You must not cut yourselves or shave your heads between your eyes for the dead.

Because you are a holy people to Yahweh your God, Yahweh has chosen you to be his treasured possession, above all other peoples on the face of the earth.

You must not eat anything disgusting.

These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,

the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.

You may eat any animal that has hooves that are split in two and that chews the cud.

However, you must not eat these animals that chew the cud or have split hooves: the camel, the rabbit, and the rock badger. Because they chew the cud but do not have split hooves, they are unclean for you.

The pig is also unclean for you because it has split hooves but does not chew the cud. You must not eat their meat or touch their dead bodies.

From all the creatures in the water, you may eat anything that has fins and scales.

You must not eat anything that does not have fins and scales; it is unclean for you.

You may eat all clean birds.

But you must not eat these birds: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey,

the red kite, the falcon, any kind of kite,

any kind of raven,

the ostrich, the owl, the seagull, any kind of hawk,

the little owl, the great owl, the horned owl,

the pelican, the carrion vulture, the cormorant,

the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.

All winged insects are unclean for you; they must not be eaten.

You may eat all clean birds.

You must not eat anything that has died naturally. You may give it to a foreigner living among you, so they can eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God. You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

You must set aside a tenth of all the produce from your fields each year.

You must eat before Yahweh your God, in the place he chooses for his name to live, the tenth of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the firstborn of your cattle and flocks. Do this so that you may learn to always respect Yahweh your God.

If the distance is too far for you to carry your tithe, because the place Yahweh your God chooses to put his Name is too far away, and if Yahweh your God has blessed you with much,

then you must change it into money, tie the money in your hand, and go to the place Yahweh your God chooses.

You may use the money to buy whatever you want—cattle, sheep, wine, strong drink, or anything else you desire. You will eat there in the presence of Yahweh your God and celebrate with your family.

Do not neglect the Levite who lives in your towns, because he has no land or inheritance among you.

At the end of every three years, you must bring all the tithe, or tenth, of your harvest from that year and store it in your towns.

The Levite, since he has no portion or inheritance among you, along with the foreigner living among you, the fatherless, and the widow who live in your towns, may come and eat until they are satisfied. Do this so that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work you do.
