Deuteronomy

Chapter 10

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

At that time, Yahweh told me, "Cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and come up to me on the mountain, and make a wooden ark."

I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets you broke, and you will put them in the ark."

So I made an ark of acacia wood, cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and went up onto the mountain, carrying the two tablets in my hand.

On the tablets, Yahweh wrote the Ten Commandments, just as he had done the first time. These are the commandments he spoke to you on the mountain from the fire on the day everyone gathered. Then Yahweh gave them to me.

Then I turned around and came down from the mountain. I put the tablets in the ark I had made, and they are still there, just as Yahweh commanded me.

(The people of Israel traveled from Beeroth Bene Jaakan to Moserah. Aaron died and was buried there, and his son Eleazar took his place as priest.

From there they traveled to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land with many streams of water.

At that time, Yahweh set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of Yahweh's covenant, to serve him, and to give blessings in his name, which they still do today.

That is why the Levi tribe does not share in the land or inheritance with their relatives; Yahweh himself is their inheritance, just as Yahweh your God told them.)

I stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights, just as I did the first time. And Yahweh listened to me that time too; Yahweh decided not to destroy you.

Yahweh told me, "Get up and continue your journey at the head of the people. They will go in and take possession of the land that I promised to give their ancestors."

Now, people of Israel, what does Yahweh your God ask of you? Only to respect Yahweh your God, to follow all his ways, to love him, and to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and all your soul,

and to obey Yahweh's commands and rules that I am giving you today for your own good.

Look, the heavens, even the highest heavens, and the earth with everything in it, belong to Yahweh your God.

Yet, Yahweh took pleasure in your ancestors and loved them. He chose their descendants after them—yes, you—above all other peoples, as it is today.

So, change your hearts and stop being stubborn.

For Yahweh your God is the God of all gods and the Lord of all lords. He is the great, powerful, and awesome God who shows no favoritism and cannot be bribed.

He gives justice to orphans and widows, and loves foreigners, providing them with food and clothing.

So you must also love foreigners, because you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.

You must respect Yahweh your God, serve him, remain loyal to him, and make promises in his name.

He is your source of praise, and he is your God who has done these great and awesome things that you have seen with your own eyes.

When your ancestors went down to Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now, Yahweh your God has made you as many as the stars in the sky.
