After the commotion died down, Paul sent for the believers, said goodbye to them, and left to go to Macedonia.
He traveled through that area, encouraging the people with many words, and then arrived in Greece.
He stayed there for three months. When he was about to sail for Syria, some Jews plotted against him, so he decided to return through Macedonia.
These men traveled with him as far as Asia: Sopater from Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.
But these men had gone on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas.
After the festival of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi. Five days later, we met them in Troas, where we stayed for seven days.
On Sunday, we met to share a meal. Paul talked with them, because he planned to leave the next day. He continued speaking until midnight.
There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.
A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window and fell into a deep sleep. As Paul kept talking, Eutychus, overcome by sleep, fell from the third story and died.
Paul went downstairs, threw himself on the young man, and put his arms around him. “Don’t worry,” he said, “he’s alive!”
Then Paul went back upstairs, shared the meal, and ate. He talked with them for a long time, until daybreak, and then he left.
They brought the young man in alive and were greatly comforted.
We went ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos. We planned to pick Paul up there, because he had arranged to travel by land.
When he met us in Assos, we took him aboard and went to Mitylene.
We sailed from there and the next day we were opposite Chios. The day after, we reached Samos, stayed in Trogyllium, and then arrived in Miletus the day after that.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so he wouldn't have to spend any time in Asia. He was in a hurry, hoping to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, if possible.
From Miletus, he sent for the elders of the church in Ephesus and asked them to come to him.
When they arrived, he said to them, "You know how I lived among you all the time, from the first day I set foot in Asia,
serving the Lord with complete humility, with many tears, and enduring trials that came to me because of the plots of the Jews.
how I taught you everything that was helpful, publicly and house to house, without holding back.
I urged both Jews and Greeks to turn to God and believe in our Lord Jesus.
Now, I am compelled by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there;
except that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that imprisonment and suffering are waiting for me.
But none of these things bother me, and I don't value my own life. My only goal is to finish the race and complete the work the Lord Jesus gave me: to fully share the Good News about God's grace.
And now, listen, I know that none of you, among whom I preached about God’s Kingdom, will ever see me again.
Therefore, I declare to you today that I am not responsible for the fate of anyone,
because I didn't hesitate to tell you everything God planned.
Pay attention to yourselves and to the entire flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of the Lord and God, which he bought with his own blood.
For I know that after I leave, fierce wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.
Even from your own group, men will rise up and speak twisted things to draw away followers after them.
So stay alert, remembering that for three years, night and day, I never stopped warning each of you with tears.
Now, brothers and sisters, I entrust you to God and to the message of his grace, which can build you up and give you power among all those who are made holy.
I never wanted anyone’s silver, gold, or clothing.
You yourselves know that these hands worked to provide for my needs and the needs of those with me.
In everything, I set an example for you, showing that by working hard you should help the weak and remember the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’
After saying these things, he knelt down and prayed with all of them.
They all cried deeply and hugged Paul, kissing him,
sad most of all because he said they would never see his face again. Then they went with him to the ship.
