Chapter 18

The church begins and spreads.

After these things, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.

There he found a Jewish man named Aquila, who was born in Pontus. Aquila had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to stay with them,

and since they were all tentmakers, he lived and worked with them.

Every Sabbath, he spoke in the synagogue, trying to convince both Jews and Greeks.

But when Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul dedicated himself fully to preaching, telling the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

When they opposed him and spoke evil, he shook the dust from his clothes and told them, “Your blood is on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on, I will go to the Gentiles!”

He left there and went to the home of a man named Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.

Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, along with his entire household. Many of the Corinthians who heard Paul also believed and were baptized.

One night, the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Don’t be afraid, but keep speaking and don’t be silent,

because I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city.”

So he stayed there for a year and six months, teaching God’s word among them.

But when Gallio was the governor of Achaia, the Jews united and rose up against Paul, bringing him before the judgment seat.

They said, “This man is persuading people to worship God in ways that are against the law.”

But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, "If this were a matter of a crime or some serious wrongdoing, then it would be right for me to listen to you, you Jews.

However, if these are arguments about words, names, and your own law, you can deal with it yourselves. I don’t want to be a judge of those kinds of things."

So he forced them to leave the court.

Then all the Greeks grabbed Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him right there in front of the judge’s seat. Gallio didn’t care about any of this.

Paul stayed there many more days after this. Then he said goodbye to the believers and sailed for Syria with Priscilla and Aquila. In Cenchreae, he had his head shaved because he had made a special promise to God.

They arrived in Ephesus, and Paul left Priscilla and Aquila there. He then went into the synagogue and discussed things with the Jews.

They asked him to stay longer, but he refused.

As he was leaving them, he said, "I must definitely be in Jerusalem for this upcoming celebration. But if God allows, I will return to you." Then he sailed away from Ephesus.

When he landed in Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, then traveled down to Antioch.

After spending some time there, he left and traveled through the regions of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

Now a Jew named Apollos, who was from Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a very good speaker and knew the Scriptures well.

He had been taught about the Lord’s way, and with great enthusiasm, he spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, even though he only knew about John’s baptism.

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained God’s way to him more completely.

When Apollos decided to go to Achaia, the believers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there, asking them to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who had believed through God’s grace,

because he strongly argued against the Jews in public, using the Scriptures to prove that Jesus was the Christ.
