In those days, Hezekiah became sick and was dying. The prophet Isaiah, Amoz's son, came to him and said, "Yahweh says, 'Put your affairs in order, because you will die and not recover.'"
Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to Yahweh, saying,
“Please, Yahweh, remember how I have lived before you faithfully and with a wholehearted commitment, always doing what you consider good.” Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Before Isaiah had even left the middle part of the city, Yahweh spoke to him,
saying, “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people, ‘Yahweh, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Watch, I will heal you. On the third day, you will go up to Yahweh’s house.
I will add fifteen years to your life. I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.’”
Isaiah said, “Get a cake of figs.” So they got one and placed it on the infected area, and Hezekiah recovered.
Hezekiah asked Isaiah, “What sign will prove that Yahweh will heal me and that I will go up to Yahweh’s house on the third day?”
Isaiah said, “This will be your sign from Yahweh, proving that Yahweh will do what he has promised: Should the shadow on the sundial move forward ten steps or go back ten steps?”
Hezekiah answered, “It’s easy for the shadow to move forward ten steps. No, let the shadow go back ten steps instead.”
Isaiah the prophet called out to Yahweh, and Yahweh made the shadow go back ten steps on the sundial of Ahaz.
At that time, Berodach Baladan, son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, because he had heard that Hezekiah had been ill.
Hezekiah welcomed them and showed them everything in his storerooms—the silver, the gold, the spices, the valuable oil, his armory, and all the treasures he possessed. There was nothing in his palace or anywhere in his kingdom that Hezekiah didn't show them.
Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and asked him, “What did these men say? And where did they come from?” Hezekiah replied, “They came from a distant country, from Babylon.”
Isaiah asked, “What did they see in your palace?” Hezekiah answered, “They saw everything in my palace. There is nothing among my treasures that I didn't show them.”
Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to Yahweh’s message.
‘Watch out, because the time is coming when everything in your palace, and everything your ancestors have stored up until today, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says Yahweh.
‘Some of your own sons, your descendants, will be taken away and made into eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’”
Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The message from Yahweh that you have spoken is good.” He also said, “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.”
The rest of Hezekiah’s accomplishments, all his power, how he made the pool and the channel, and brought water into the city—aren't these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
Hezekiah passed away and was buried with his ancestors, and his son Manasseh became king in his place.
